Having just done: 〜たばかり
Verb-た + ばかり
た-form + ばかり: have only just done, “it's recent” in the speaker's eyes. Behaves like a noun: ばかりです, ばかりの N, ばかりなので.
In short
〜たばかり says an action has just happened, from the speaker's point of view: “it wasn't long ago”. Even a month can feel “very recent”. It behaves like a noun: 〜たばかりです, 〜たばかりの N, 〜たばかりなので.
- 先月 日本に 来た ばかりです。せんげつ にほんに きた ばかりです。I only came to Japan last month.
- 買った ばかりの かさを なくして しまった。かった ばかりの かさを なくして しまった。I've lost the umbrella I'd only just bought.
- さっき 食べた ばかりなのに、もう おなかが すいた。さっき たべた ばかりなのに、もう おなかが すいた。I've only just eaten, and yet I'm already hungry.
The basics
ばかり after the た-form means “it hasn't been long since…”. What counts is how the speaker feels: for someone who's been living in Japan for a month, 来た ばかり is perfectly natural. In English, that's “only just”, “not long ago”, or simply “just”.
I only came to Japan last month.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- この 仕事は 始めた ばかりです。この しごとは はじめた ばかりです。I've only just started this job.
- 引っ越した ばかりで、まだ 友だちが いません。ひっこした ばかりで、まだ ともだちが いません。I've just moved, so I don't have any friends yet.
How to use it
〜たばかり behaves like a noun: です at the end, の before a noun, なので / なのに to link, で to chain on.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| end of sentence | 〜た ばかりです | 来た ばかりです |
| before a noun | 〜た ばかりの N | 買った ばかりの かさ |
| cause | 〜た ばかりなので | 来た ばかりなので |
| contrast | 〜た ばかりなのに | 食べた ばかりなのに |
| linking | 〜た ばかりで | 来た ばかりで |
- 買った ばかりの かさを 電車に 忘れた。かった ばかりの かさを でんしゃに わすれた。I left the umbrella I'd just bought on the train.
- 日本語は 習い始めた ばかりなので、まだ 上手じゃ ありません。にほんごは ならいはじめた ばかりなので、まだ じょうずじゃ ありません。I've only just started learning Japanese, so I'm not good yet.
たばかり or たところ?
〜たところ (previous point) is objective and precise: the action has just ended, right now. 〜たばかり is subjective: “it wasn't long ago”, whether that's a minute or a month. Only たばかり can apply to something several days ago, or go before a noun.
| 〜たところ | 〜たばかり | |
|---|---|---|
| a minute ago | 今 着いた ところ ✓ | 今 着いた ばかり ✓ |
| a month ago | × | 先月 来た ばかり ✓ |
| before a noun | × | 買った ばかりの 靴 ✓ |
- 今 着いた ところです。いま ついた ところです。I've just arrived, this very minute.
- 去年 けっこんした ばかりです。きょねん けっこんした ばかりです。I only got married last year.
Common mistakes
- Using the dictionary form: “来る ばかり” doesn't have this meaning. It's always the た-form.
- Mixing it up with ばかり “nothing but” (next point): 食べた ばかり = I've just eaten; 食べて ばかり いる = all I do is eat.
- Using たところ for something several days ago: “先月 来た ところ” doesn't work; you need たばかり.
