About to, in the middle of, just did: 〜ところ
Dict. + ところ/〜ている ところ/〜た ところ
Dict. + ところ = about to; 〜ている ところ = in the middle of; 〜た ところ = have just done. 〜ところに/へ = just as.
In short
ところ, “place”, is also used to pinpoint a precise moment in an action. After the dictionary form: you're about to act. After 〜ている: you're right in the middle of it. After the た-form: you've only just finished.
- 今から 出かける ところです。いまから でかける ところです。I'm just about to go out.
- 今 ご飯を 食べて いる ところです。いま ごはんを たべて いる ところです。I'm in the middle of eating.
- 今 駅に 着いた ところです。いま えきに ついた ところです。I've just arrived at the station.
The basics
Picture an action on a timeline. ところ points to a precise spot on that line: just before, during, or just after. The form of the verb before ところ tells you where you are.
It's used a lot to answer “what are you doing?”, “where are you?”, especially on the phone.
I've just arrived at the station.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 今 家を 出る ところです。いま いえを でる ところです。I'm just about to leave home.
- 今 家を 出た ところです。いま いえを でた ところです。I've just left home.
The three moments
Three forms, three moments. They often come with a time word: これから / 今から (“just before”), 今 (“during”), 今 / ちょうど / さっき (“just after”).
| Moment | Form | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| just before | dict. + ところ | 食べる ところ | I'm about to eat |
| during | 〜て いる + ところ | 食べて いる ところ | I'm in the middle of eating |
| just after | 〜た + ところ | 食べた ところ | I've just eaten |
- これから 晩ご飯を 作る ところです。これから ばんごはんを つくる ところです。I'm about to make dinner.
- 今 資料を コピーして いる ところです。いま しりょうを こぴーして いる ところです。I'm in the middle of photocopying the documents.
〜ところに・〜ところへ: right at that moment
With に or へ, ところ becomes “just as”: something happens right while you're doing something else. Often someone arrives, or the phone rings.
- ちょうど 家を 出る ところに、友だちが 来ました。ちょうど いえを でる ところに、ともだちが きました。Just as I was leaving, a friend turned up.
- ご飯を 食べて いる ところへ、電話が かかって きた。ごはんを たべて いる ところへ、でんわが かかって きた。The phone rang while I was eating.
ところ: place and moment
The same word ところ also means “place”: 静かな ところ (a quiet place). In that sense, it's also written in kanji (所); for the “moment” meaning, however, ところ is always written in hiragana.
For “have just done” with a broader nuance (“not long ago”), there's 〜たばかり: see the next point.
- ここは 静かな ところですね。ここは しずかな ところですね。It's a quiet place, isn't it? (place)
- 今 起きた ところです。いま おきた ところです。I've just got up. (moment)
Common mistakes
- Mixing up the three forms: 食べる ところ (I'm about to eat) ≠ 食べた ところ (I've just eaten).
- Mixing up ところ “place” and ところ “moment”: look at the context (静かな ところ = a place; 今 出る ところです, a verb often with 今, これから or ちょうど = a moment).
- Writing 所 for the moment: in this grammatical sense, ところ is written in hiragana.
- Using たところ for something that happened a week ago: it means “just now”.
