Only (and not much): しか〜ない
N/quantity + しか + negative
N / amount + しか + negative verb = only, with the idea that it's not much. しか replaces が and を, and goes after the other particles (でしか, にしか).
In short
しか + a negative verb means “only”, with the feeling that it's not much, not enough: 百円しか ありません, “I've only got 100 yen”. しか is always used with a negative — rather like English “nothing but” or “not… except”.
- さいふに 百円しか ありません。さいふに ひゃくえんしか ありません。I've only got 100 yen in my wallet.
- 日本語は 少ししか 話せません。にほんごは すこししか はなせません。I can only speak a little Japanese.
- この パンは 大阪でしか 買えません。この ぱんは おおさかでしか かえません。You can only buy this bread in Osaka.
The basics
しか goes after whatever is being limited (a thing, an amount, a place…), and the verb must be negative. Think of it as “nothing but” or “not… except”: “I've got nothing but 100 yen”, in other words “I've only got 100 yen”.
The nuance matters: しか〜ない stresses that it's not much, not enough, less than expected.
I've only got 100 yen in my wallet.
- noun
- particle
- verb
- 朝は コーヒーしか 飲みません。あさは こーひーしか のみません。In the morning, I only drink coffee.
- ふじさんには 一度しか 登った ことが ありません。ふじさんには いちどしか のぼった ことが ありません。I've only climbed Mount Fuji once.
Where to put しか
しか replaces が and を: 百円が ある → 百円しか ない; コーヒーを 飲む → コーヒーしか 飲まない. With the other particles (に, で, から, と…), しか goes right after them: 東京にしか ない, 駅からしか 見えない.
| Starting sentence | With しか | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| コーヒーを 飲む | コーヒーしか 飲まない | を disappears |
| 時間が ある | 時間が 十分しか ない | しか after the amount |
| 東京に ある | 東京にしか ない | に + しか |
| 友だちと 話す | 友だちとしか 話さない | と + しか |
- この 店は 日曜日しか 開いて いません。この みせは にちようびしか あいて いません。This shop is only open on Sundays.
- この ことは 母にしか 話して いません。この ことは ははにしか はなして いません。I've only told my mother about it.
しか or だけ?
だけ (N5) is neutral and used in the affirmative: 百円だけ ある, “I've got just 100 yen”. しか〜ない gives the same amount, but with regret: “I've only got 100 yen…”. The two can even be combined for emphasis: 百円だけしか ない.
| Phrase | Verb | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| 百円だけ あります | affirmative | neutral: I've got 100 yen, that's all |
| 百円しか ありません | negative | it's not much, not enough |
- 一つだけ ください。ひとつだけ ください。Just one, please. (neutral)
- 一つしか のこって いません。ひとつしか のこって いません。There's only one left. (not much)
Common mistakes
- Using an affirmative verb after しか: “百円しか あります” is wrong; you need ありません.
- Keeping を or が: “お金をしか” doesn't exist; しか replaces them.
- Translating it as a full negative: 少ししか 話せない doesn't mean “I can't speak”, but “I can only speak a little”.
- Forgetting that しか goes after に, で, から: 図書館でしか, not “図書館しかで”.
