Starting, finishing, continuing: 〜はじめる・〜おわる・〜続ける

Stem + 始める/終わる/続ける

Stem + 始める (start …ing), 終わる (finish …ing), 続ける (keep …ing): 読み始める, 読み終わる, 読み続ける. They conjugate like ordinary verbs.

In short

By attaching 始める, 終わる or 続ける to a verb stem, you say where the action stands: it's starting (雨が 降り始めた), finishing (本を 読み終わった) or continuing (三時間 歩き続けた).

  • 雨が 降り始めました。あめが ふりはじめました。It started to rain.
  • この 本は もう 読み終わりました。この ほんは もう よみおわりました。I've already finished reading this book.
  • 三時間 歩き続けて、疲れた。さんじかん あるきつづけて、つかれた。I walked for three hours without stopping, and I'm tired.

The basics

Japanese forms compound verbs: a first verb in the stem (the ます-form without ます), then a second verb that says how the action unfolds. 始める (to start), 終わる (to finish), 続ける (to continue) are the most useful — like English “start …ing”, “finish …ing”, “keep …ing”.

The resulting verb conjugates normally through its second part: 読み始めた, 読み終わったら, 読み続けて いる.

  • 子どもが ご飯を 食べ終わったら、出かけましょう。こどもが ごはんを たべおわったら、でかけましょう。When the children have finished eating, let's go out.

How to form it

Stem + 始める / 終わる / 続ける. 始める and 続ける conjugate like group 2 verbs, 終わる like a group 1 verb. All three are written with their kanji: 始, 終, 続.

  • この 本は 先週 読み終わりました。この ほんは せんしゅう よみおわりました。I finished reading this book last week.
  • 彼は 十年 同じ 店で 働き続けて いる。かれは じゅうねん おなじ みせで はたらきつづけて いる。He's been working in the same shop for ten years.

Nuances and neighbours

〜始める works for a deliberate action (読み始める) as well as for a phenomenon (雨が 降り始める). In writing, you'll also come across 〜終える, more formal than 〜終わる (読み終える).

〜て しまう stresses completion with an emotion; 〜終わる simply states that the action is over. And for a sudden, uncontrolled start, there's 〜だす: coming later.

  • ケーキを 全部 食べて しまった。けーきを ぜんぶ たべて しまった。I ate the whole cake (oops).
  • ケーキを 食べ終わった。けーきを たべおわった。I finished eating the cake. (plain statement)

Common mistakes

  • Using the dictionary form: “読む始める” is wrong; it's the stem: 読み始める.
  • Mixing up 始める (I start something) and 始まる (something starts): in the compound, it's always 始める.
  • Mixing up 〜続ける and 〜て いる: 歩いて いる just says “I'm walking”; 歩き続ける stresses the duration, without stopping.
