Doing in advance: 〜ておく
Verb-て + おく(spoken: 〜とく/〜どく)
Verb-て + おく: do in advance, in preparation, or leave as is. Spoken: 〜とく / 〜どく. 〜て おく = the preparatory action, 〜て ある = its result.
In short
おく means “to put, to place”. After a て-form, it means “to do something in advance, in preparation”: 旅行の 前に ホテルを 予約して おく. It's also used for “leaving things as they are”: 窓を 開けて おいて ください (leave the window open). In speech, 〜て おく becomes 〜とく.
- 旅行の 前に、ホテルを 予約して おきます。りょこうの まえに、ホテルを よやくして おきます。I'll book the hotel before the trip (so it's sorted).
- パーティーの 前に、飲み物を 買って おこう。パーティーの まえに、のみものを かって おこう。Let's get the drinks before the party.
- あついので、窓を 開けて おいて ください。あついので、まどを あけて おいて ください。It's hot, so please leave the window open.
- あしたの じゅぎょうの ことばを 調べとくね。あしたの じゅぎょうの ことばを しらべとくね。I'll look up the words for tomorrow's class in advance.
The basics
おく means “to put, to set aside”. 〜て おく is doing an action and “setting it aside” for later: you prepare, you plan ahead. The purpose is often left unsaid (the trip, the party, the exam), but it's always there.
I'll book the hotel before the trip.

How to form it
て-form + おく, which conjugates like a group 1 verb (おきます, おいた, おいて, おこう). In speech, ておく contracts to とく, and でおく to どく.
| Form | Standard | Spoken |
|---|---|---|
| present | 買って おく | 買っとく |
| past | 買って おいた | 買っといた |
| request | 買って おいて | 買っといて |
| with で (読んで) | 読んで おく | 読んどく |
| volitional | 買って おこう | 買っとこう |
- チケット、買っといたよ。チケット、かっといたよ。I got the tickets (in advance) — all sorted.
Two uses: preparing, or leaving as is
Preparing: doing something now so you're ready later (予約して おく, 買って おく). Leaving as is: not touching, keeping things the way they are (開けて おく: to leave open; そのままに して おく: to leave it like that).
- 使った コップは そこに おいて おいて ください。あとで 洗います。つかった コップは そこに おいて おいて ください。あとで あらいます。Just leave the used glasses there. I'll wash them later.
- 子どもが 寝て いるので、電気を 消して おいて。こどもが ねて いるので、でんきを けして おいて。The kids are asleep, so leave the light off.
〜て おく, 〜て ある, 〜て いる
〜て おく is about the action you do in preparation (often still to come). 〜て ある describes the resulting state, once it's done. 〜て いる on an intransitive simply observes a state.
| Phrase | Stage | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 窓を 開けて おく | the action | I open the window (in preparation) |
| 窓が 開けて ある | the result | the window has been opened on purpose |
| 窓が 開いて いる | the observation | the window is open |
- ビールを 冷やして おいたので、もう 冷たいですよ。ビールを ひやして おいたので、もう つめたいですよ。I put the beer in the fridge earlier, so it's already cold.
Common mistakes
- Thinking おく only means “to put”: after て, it means “in advance” or “leave as is”.
- Forgetting the implied purpose: 〜て おく always assumes a “for later”.
- Mixing up とく (contraction of て おく: 買っとく, 見とく) and と (quotation or “and”): とく conjugates like a verb (とく, といた, といて).
- Writing おく in kanji in its grammatical use: it's written in hiragana.
