Trying something out: 〜てみる
Verb-て + みる
Verb-て + みる: do something to see, try it out, taste it. Conjugates like 見る but is written in hiragana: 〜て みたい, 〜て みて ください, 〜て みよう.
In short
〜て みる means “to do something to see what it's like”: 着て みても いいですか (can I try it on?), 一度 行って みたい (I'd like to go there once, to see). みる comes from 見る (to look), but in this use it's written in hiragana.
- この 服、着て みても いいですか。この ふく、きて みても いいですか。Can I try this on?
- 一度 大阪の たこやきを 食べて みたいです。いちど おおさかの たこやきを たべて みたいです。I'd like to try Osaka takoyaki one day.
- わからない ことばは 辞書で 調べて みましょう。わからない ことばは じしょで しらべて みましょう。Let's try looking up the words we don't know in the dictionary.
- 新しい カフェに 行って みました。とても よかったです。あたらしい カフェに いって みました。とても よかったです。I went to check out the new café. It was really good.
The basics
みる means “to look”. After a て-form, it keeps an idea of “seeing”: you do the action to see what happens, to test it. In English, that's “try”, “have a go”, “try out”, “go and see”, or “…and see”.
The result isn't necessarily bad: 〜て みる just says you're giving it a go.
Can I try this on?
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- adjective
- おおさかべんで 話して みて!おおさかべんで はなして みて!Try speaking in Osaka dialect!
- あの 店、こんど 行って みようか。あの みせ、こんど いって みようか。Shall we go and check out that shop next time?
How to form it
て-form of the verb + みる, which conjugates like 見る (group 2). You can combine it with everything you know: 〜て みたい (I'd like to try), 〜て みても いいですか (may I try?), 〜て みて ください (go on, try it), 〜て みよう (let's try).
| Form | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| present | 食べて みます | I'll try it |
| past | 食べて みました | I tried it (to see) |
| wish | 食べて みたい | I'd like to try it |
| request | 食べて みて ください | go on, try it |
| volitional | 食べて みよう | let's try it |
| permission | 食べて みても いい? | can I try it? |
- 日本語で メールを 書いて みました。にほんごで メールを かいて みました。I tried writing an email in Japanese.
- この アプリ、使って みて ください。便利ですよ。この アプリ、つかって みて ください。べんりですよ。Try this app. It's handy.
Not to be confused with 見る
When みる follows a て-form, it has lost its meaning of “to look”, so it's written in hiragana. 見て みる does exist (to watch and see): the first 見 is the real verb, the second みる is the grammatical form.
- この 映画、見て みたい。この えいが、みて みたい。I'd like to see this film (to see what it's like).
Trying out, not “trying in vain”
〜て みる means you really do the action, to see. It isn't English “try to” in the sense of making an effort that fails: for that, Japanese uses 〜ようと する, which comes at N3. 電話して みた means “I called, to see” (I did call).
- ドアを おして みたけど、開かなかった。ドアを おして みたけど、あかなかった。I gave the door a push, but it wouldn't open.
Common mistakes
- Writing みる in kanji (見る) in this use: as a grammar form, it's written in hiragana.
- Thinking 〜て みる implies failure: the action is actually done; you're just seeing how it turns out.
- Mixing up 食べて みる (to try eating) and 食べるのを 見る (to watch someone eat).
