Making, choosing: 〜くする・〜にする
い-adj → く する; な-adj, noun → に する
い-adj → く する, な-adj/noun → に する: deliberately change something (the counterpart of 〜く なる). Noun + に する = to choose: コーヒーに します.
In short
〜く する and 〜に する say you deliberately change something: 部屋を きれいに する (to make the room clean), 音を 小さく する (to turn the sound down). It's the counterpart of 〜く なる / 〜に なる (to become), seen at N5. With a noun, に する also means “to choose”: コーヒーに します (I'll have a coffee).
- 部屋を きれいに しました。へやを きれいに しました。I tidied the room (I made it clean).
- すみません、音を 小さく して ください。すみません、おとを ちいさく して ください。Excuse me, could you turn the sound down, please?
- 飲み物は コーヒーに します。のみものは コーヒーに します。For my drink, I'll have a coffee.
- かみを みじかく しました。かみを みじかく しました。I had my hair cut short.
The basics
At N5, you saw 〜く なる / 〜に なる: something becomes different, on its own (寒く なる: it's getting cold). With する instead of なる, someone causes the change: you make the thing cleaner, smaller, shorter — like English “make” or “turn” (turn it down). As with transitive verbs, the object takes を.
Please turn the sound down.
- noun
- adjective
- verb
- grammatical form
- 値段を もう 少し 安く して ください。ねだんを もう すこし やすく して ください。Could you make it a little cheaper?
- 部屋を 明るく しましょう。へやを あかるく しましょう。Let's brighten up the room.
How to form it
Exactly as with なる: い-adjective → く (いい → よく), な-adjective and noun → に. Then する, conjugated as normal.
| Type | Base | Make it… |
|---|---|---|
| い-adjective | 小さい | 小さく する |
| い-adjective | いい | よく する |
| な-adjective | きれい | きれいに する |
| な-adjective | 静か | 静かに する |
| noun | コーヒー | コーヒーに する |
- 図書館では 静かに して ください。としょかんでは しずかに して ください。Please keep quiet in the library.
する or なる: who causes the change?
なる describes a change that happens; する, a change someone makes. The particle follows the same logic as transitive and intransitive verbs: 部屋が きれいに なった (the room became clean) / 部屋を きれいに した (I made the room clean).
| なる (it becomes) | する (you make it) |
|---|---|
| 部屋が あたたかく なる | 部屋を あたたかく する |
| 町が きれいに なる | 町を きれいに する |
| かみが みじかく なる | かみを みじかく する |
- 春に なって、あたたかく なりました。はるに なって、あたたかく なりました。Spring has come, and it's got warmer.
Noun + に する: choosing, deciding
With a noun, に する often means “to choose, to go for”. It's the phrase you use in a restaurant or a shop: コーヒーに します (I'll have a coffee), これに します (I'll take this one). It's also used to fix a time or a place: 会議は 三時に しましょう.
- どれに しますか。— この 赤いのに します。どれに しますか。 この あかいのに します。Which one would you like? — I'll take the red one.
- たんじょうびの プレゼントは 本に しよう。たんじょうびの プレゼントは ほんに しよう。Let's go with a book for the birthday present.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up なる (to become, on its own) and する (to make, deliberately).
- Saying “大きいに する”: an い-adjective takes く; it's 大きく する.
- Forgetting に in a restaurant: “コーヒー します” and “コーヒーを します” don't work; it's コーヒーに します.
