  • 交渉の進展いかんでは、ストライキもあり得る。こうしょうのしんてんいかんでは、すとらいきもありうる。Depending on how negotiations progress, a strike can't be ruled out.

The basics

いかん (如何) is an old word meaning “how, in what way”. Noun + いかん is thus “how X turns out”. 〜いかんで: what follows depends on that outcome. It's used with nouns that can vary: results, attitude, effort, state of health, how negotiations go.

It's a written equivalent of 次第で. You come across it in regulations, press releases and the press.

  • 治療の効果は、患者本人の意欲いかんだ。ちりょうのこうかは、かんじゃほんにんのいよくいかんだ。How effective the treatment is depends on the patient's own motivation.

How to form it

Noun + いかんで, with or without の (成績いかんで or 成績のいかんで). At the end of a sentence: Noun + いかんだ (“it all depends on X”). いかんによっては and いかんでは introduce an extreme possibility: “in some cases, it could even go as far as…”.

FormMeaningExample
Noun(の)+ いかんでdepending on X成績いかんで
Noun(の)+ いかんだit all depends on X君の努力いかんだ
Noun(の)+ いかんではdepending on X, it may be that状況いかんでは
Noun(の)+ いかんによってはsame meaning, more explicit結果のいかんによっては
  • 合格できるかどうかは、君の努力いかんだ。ごうかくできるかどうかは、きみのどりょくいかんだ。Whether you pass depends entirely on your efforts.
  • 状況いかんでは、計画を中止せざるを得ない。じょうきょういかんでは、けいかくをちゅうしせざるをえない。Depending on the situation, we may have no choice but to cancel the project.

いかんで, 次第で or によって?

次第で (N2) has the same meaning and is used in speech as well as writing: 天気次第で. いかんで is the administrative, formal version. によって indicates variation or cause more broadly, without stressing that a decision depends on it.

Watch out for the reverse meaning: いかんを問わず / いかんにかかわらず mean “whatever X may be” (next point). And don't confuse it with spoken いかん (“that won't do”), the colloquial form of いけない.

ExpressionRegisterExample
〜次第でeveryday天気次第で出かける
〜いかんでwritten, administrative審査の結果いかんで
〜によってneutral, variation人によって考え方が違う
〜いかんを問わずreverse meaning: whatever理由のいかんを問わず
  • 明日は天気次第で出かけるかどうか決めよう。あしたはてんきしだいででかけるかどうかきめよう。Tomorrow, let's decide whether to go out depending on the weather.
  • そんなことをしてはいかん。そんなことをしてはいかん。You mustn't do that. (spoken, a little old-fashioned)

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up いかんで (“depending on X”) and いかんを問わず (“whatever X may be”): they look alike but say the opposite.
  • Taking it for spoken いかん (“that won't do”): 結果いかんで has nothing negative about it.
  • Using it in relaxed conversation: in speech, 次第で is more natural.
