Unworthy of one's role: 〜まじき
Noun + に/として + あるまじき + noun ; Verb (dictionary) + まじき + noun
Status noun + にあるまじき/としてあるまじき + noun: “unworthy of someone who is X”. Rarer: Verb + まじき (する → すまじき). A moral condemnation, written style.
In short
〜まじき: “unworthy of, inexcusable for”; you condemn behaviour that seriously contradicts the person's status (教師にあるまじき行為, “an act unworthy of a teacher”). まじき is the noun-modifying form of the old auxiliary まじ, the negative of べし. Written style, moral criticism, the press.
- 生徒に暴力を振るうなど、教師にあるまじき行為だ。せいとにぼうりょくをふるうなど、きょうしにあるまじきこういだ。Hitting a pupil is an act unworthy of a teacher.
- 公金を私的に流用するとは、政治家としてあるまじきことだ。こうきんをしてきにりゅうようするとは、せいじかとしてあるまじきことだ。Diverting public funds for personal use is inexcusable for a politician.
- 子どもを狙った犯罪は、決して許すまじき行為だ。こどもをねらったはんざいは、けっしてゆるすまじきこういだ。Crimes targeting children are acts that can never be forgiven.
The basics
まじ is the old negative of べし: “one must not”. Its form まじき goes before a noun. In the vast majority of cases, you meet it in the construction 〜にあるまじき / 〜としてあるまじき: “that should not exist in someone who is X”.
So you name a status (teacher, doctor, police officer, politician, adult, parent) and denounce behaviour that betrays it. The tone is one of stern moral judgement, typical of editorials and comment on scandals.
That's an act unworthy of a teacher.
- noun
- particle
- verb
- grammatical form
- それは教師にあるまじき行為だ。それはきょうしにあるまじきこういだ。That's an act unworthy of a teacher.
- 市民を守るべき警察官にあるまじき不祥事が起きた。しみんをまもるべきけいさつかんにあるまじきふしょうじがおきた。A scandal has broken out that is unworthy of police officers whose job is to protect citizens.
How to form it
The main construction is status noun + にあるまじき or としてあるまじき + noun (行為, 発言, 態度, こと). More rarely, まじき follows a verb in the dictionary form directly: 許すまじき (“that must not be forgiven”). する becomes すまじき.
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + にあるまじき + noun | unworthy of (status) | 医師にあるまじき行為 |
| Noun + としてあるまじき + noun | same meaning, “as a” | 大人としてあるまじき態度 |
| Verb + まじき + noun | that must not be done | 許すまじき犯罪 |
| する → すまじき | form of する | 口にすまじき言葉 |
- 大人としてあるまじき振る舞いに、周りの人はあきれていた。おとなとしてあるまじきふるまいに、まわりのひとはあきれていた。People around were appalled by behaviour so unworthy of an adult.
- それは決して口にすまじき言葉だった。それはけっしてくちにすまじきことばだった。Those were words he should never have uttered.
まじき, べきではない, べからざる or ともあろう?
べきではない is general advice or moral judgement (“one shouldn't”), with no reference to a status. べからざる describes what must not be done (or what's indispensable with 欠く), without targeting a role.
まじき stands out through status: it's the betrayal of a role that shocks. 〜ともあろう者が (“someone of his standing”) expresses the same indignation and often combines with まじき in the same sentence.
| Expression | What it condemns | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜べきではない | an act, in general | うそをつくべきではない |
| 〜べからざる | what must not be done | 許すべからざる行為 |
| 〜にあるまじき | an act unworthy of a status | 教師にあるまじき行為 |
| 〜ともあろう者が | the gap with one's rank | 大臣ともあろう者が |
- 大臣ともあろう者が、国会で居眠りをするとは、あるまじきことだ。だいじんともあろうものが、こっかいでいねむりをするとは、あるまじきことだ。That a minister, no less, should doze off in the middle of a parliamentary session is inexcusable.
- 人の悪口を言うべきではない。ひとのわるぐちをいうべきではない。You shouldn't speak ill of others.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out the status: 「×あるまじき行為だ」 on its own is vague; specify who's involved (教師にあるまじき, 政治家としてあるまじき).
- Putting まじき at the end of a sentence: it's a noun-modifying form, so it needs a noun after it (行為, 発言, こと).
- Using it for a minor slip: まじき is a severe moral condemnation, kept for serious wrongdoing.
