Without it, impossible: 〜なくして(は)
Noun + なくして(は)+ negative
Noun + なくして(は) + negative: “without X, impossible”; X is an indispensable condition (努力なくして成功はない). For a simple absence, なしで / なしに.
In short
Noun + なくして(は) + negative: “without X, it's impossible to…”; X is an indispensable condition (努力なくして成功はない, “no success without effort”). The tone of a maxim, a speech, an essay. The second part is always negative or expresses impossibility.
- 努力なくして成功はない。どりょくなくしてせいこうはない。There's no success without effort.
- 皆様のご協力なくしては、この大会の成功はあり得ませんでした。みなさまのごきょうりょくなくしては、このたいかいのせいこうはありえませんでした。Without your cooperation, this competition could never have been a success.
- 愛なくして何の人生か。あいなくしてなんのじんせいか。What would life be without love?
The basics
なくして is a written form of なくて (“without having, in the absence of”). Noun + なくして(は) sets X up as an indispensable condition: if X is missing, what follows is impossible. It's the mould of maxims (努力なくして成功なし — much like English “no pain, no gain”), solemn thanks and essays.
The second part is always negative: 〜ない, 〜あり得ない, 〜できない, or a rhetorical question amounting to a negative (何の人生か = “it wouldn't be a life”).
There's no success without effort.
- noun
- grammatical form
- adjective
- 努力なくして成功はない。どりょくなくしてせいこうはない。There's no success without effort.
- 現場の協力なくしては、この調査は一歩も進まなかった。げんばのきょうりょくなくしては、このちょうさはいっぽもすすまなかった。Without cooperation on the ground, this investigation wouldn't have moved a single step.
How to form it
Noun + なくして or なくしては (は reinforces the idea of a condition), then a negative conclusion. With a verb, go through こと: Verb + ことなくして (“without doing”). The proverbial noun form 〜なくして〜なし is common in slogans.
| Form | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + なくして + negative | indispensable condition | 努力なくして成功はない |
| Noun + なくしては + negative | same meaning, more emphatic | 協力なくしては不可能だ |
| Verb + ことなくして | without doing | 失敗することなくして成長はない |
| 〜なくして〜なし | slogan, maxim | 安全なくして生産なし |
- 安全なくして生産なし。あんぜんなくしてせいさんなし。No production without safety. (factory slogan)
- 失敗を経験することなくして、本当の成長はない。しっぱいをけいけんすることなくして、ほんとうのせいちょうはない。Without experiencing failure, there's no real growth.
なくして, なしに, なしで or ずして?
なしで and なしに describe a simple absence: you do something without X (砂糖なしで飲む, 予約なしに入れる). No idea of an indispensable condition, and what follows can be affirmative.
なくして(は) asserts that without X, what follows is impossible. ずして (戦わずして勝つ, “win without fighting”) is the literary verb version of “without doing”. ことなしに is close to ことなくして, slightly less solemn.
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜なしで/なしに | without (simple absence) | 予約なしで入れる |
| 〜なくして(は) | without X, impossible | 信頼なくして友情はない |
| Verb + ずして | without doing (literary) | 戦わずして勝つ |
| Verb + ことなしに | without doing | 許可を得ることなしに |
- この店は予約なしでも入れる。このみせはよやくなしでもはいれる。You can get into this restaurant even without a booking.
- 戦わずして勝つのが最善の策だ。たたかわずしてかつのがさいぜんのさくだ。The best strategy is to win without fighting.
Common mistakes
- Giving it an affirmative follow-up: “×努力なくして成功した” is wrong; なくして requires a negative or an impossibility. For a simple absence, say なしで.
- Using it for a trivial absence (sugar, an umbrella): なくして is kept for an essential condition.
- Confusing なくして (“without”) with なくしてしまう (“to lose”, from なくす): 財布をなくして困った is about a lost wallet.
