In short
Noun + をおいて(ほかに)〜ない: “none other than X, no one but X”; you assert that X is the only possible choice, generally in praise (彼をおいて適任者はいない, “there's no one better suited than him”). The related expression 何をおいても means “before anything else”. Formal style: speeches, recommendations, articles.
- この難しい交渉を任せられるのは、彼をおいてほかにいない。このむずかしいこうしょうをまかせられるのは、かれをおいてほかにいない。He's the only one we can entrust these tough negotiations to.
- この分野の第一人者といえば、田中教授をおいてほかにいない。このぶんやのだいいちにんしゃといえば、たなかきょうじゅをおいてほかにいない。When it comes to the leading authority in this field, it's Professor Tanaka and no one else.

The basics
おく (置く) here means “to set aside”. 〜をおいて(ほかに)〜ない: “if you set X aside, there's nothing else”. In other words, X is the only valid option. It's a solemn way of naming the ideal person, place or moment.
You hear it in recommendations (“for this post, there's only him”), speeches, glowing reviews.
For this post, there's no one but him.

- 適任者は彼をおいてほかにいない。てきにんしゃはかれをおいてほかにいない。For this post, there's no one but him.

How to form it
Noun + をおいて, followed by ほかに〜ない, ほかにいない (people) or directly a noun + はない / いない. 何をおいても is a separate fixed expression: “before anything else, come what may”.
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + をおいてほかにいない | him alone (person) | 彼をおいてほかにいない |
| Noun + をおいてほかにない | that alone (thing, place) | 京都をおいてほかにない |
| Noun + をおいて + Noun + はない | no X apart from | 今をおいてチャンスはない |
| 何をおいても | before anything else | 何をおいても駆けつける |
- 友人が困っていると聞けば、何をおいても駆けつける。ゆうじんがこまっているときけば、なにをおいてもかけつける。If I hear a friend is in trouble, I drop everything and rush over.
- この問題を解決できるのは、あなたをおいてほかにいません。このもんだいをかいけつできるのは、あなたをおいてほかにいません。You're the only person who can solve this problem.
をおいて, しかない or 以外にない?
しか〜ない is the ordinary way of saying “only”: 千円しかない (“I only have a thousand yen”), often with a sense of lack. 以外にない is neutral and logical (“there's nothing but”).
をおいて〜ない doesn't express lack but excellence: X is the best, the only one worthy. So it isn't used for a small quantity or a default choice.
| Expression | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜しか〜ない | only (often a lack) | 千円しかない |
| 〜以外にない | no other possibility (neutral) | 歩いて帰る以外にない |
| 〜をおいて〜ない | X is the only worthy choice (praise) | 彼をおいて適任者はいない |
| 何をおいても | before anything else | 何をおいても家族が大事 |
- 終電を逃したので、歩いて帰る以外にない。しゅうでんをのがしたので、あるいてかえるいがいにない。I've missed the last train, so all I can do is walk home.
- 財布には千円しかなかった。さいふにはせんえんしかなかった。I only had a thousand yen in my wallet.
Common mistakes
- Using it for a simple “except” or “only”: “×千円をおいてない” is wrong; it's 千円しかない.
- Using it for a default choice: をおいて praises X; “all that's left is to” is 〜しかない.
- Mixing up をおいて (“none other than”) and 何をおいても (“before anything else”): the particle も changes the meaning.
