Not even a single: 〜たりとも

一 + counter + たりとも + negative

一 + counter + たりとも + negative: “not even a single one”, a total, resolute negative (一円たりとも, 一瞬たりとも). Fixed: 何人たりとも, “whoever it may be”.

In short

一 + counter + たりとも + negative: “not even a single one”; a total, emphatic negative, often for a resolution or a strict prohibition (一円たりとも無駄にできない, “we can't waste even a single yen”). Formal, determined tone.

  • 一円たりとも無駄にはできない。いちえんたりともむだにはできない。We can't afford to waste even a single yen.
  • 試合中は一瞬たりとも気を抜くな。しあいちゅうはいっしゅんたりともきをぬくな。During the match, don't let your concentration slip for a single second.
  • 彼は一日たりとも練習を休んだことがない。かれはいちにちたりともれんしゅうをやすんだことがない。He's never missed training, not even for a single day.

The basics

たりとも comes from たり (a classical form of である) and とも (“even if”): “even if it's only one”. You take the smallest possible unit (one yen, one second, one person, one step) and negate it: nothing, absolutely nothing.

The tone is determined, solemn or stern: a resolution, an instruction, a prohibition, a vow.

The sentence, piece by piece
一円a single yen
たりともnot even
無駄にはto waste
できないwe can't

We can't afford to waste even a single yen.

  • noun
  • grammatical form
  • verb
  • 一円たりとも無駄にはできない。いちえんたりともむだにはできない。We can't afford to waste even a single yen.
  • 犯人は一歩たりとも家から出なかった。はんにんはいっぽたりともいえからでなかった。The culprit didn't set a single foot outside the house.

How to form it

一 + counter + たりとも, followed by a negative, a prohibition (〜な, 〜てはならない) or an impossibility. The fixed expression 何人(なんぴと)たりとも means “no one, whoever they may be”.

ExpressionMeaningExample
一円たりともnot a single yen一円たりとも払わない
一日たりともnot a single day一日たりとも休まない
一瞬・一刻たりともnot a single moment一瞬たりとも油断できない
一人たりともnot a single person一人たりとも見捨てない
何人たりともwhoever it may be何人たりとも立ち入るな
  • 何人たりともこの部屋に入ることは許されない。なんぴとたりともこのへやにはいることはゆるされない。No one, whoever they may be, is allowed into this room.
  • 被災者を一人たりとも見捨ててはならない。ひさいしゃをひとりたりともみすててはならない。We must not abandon a single disaster victim.

たりとも, も, すら or として?

一円も払わない says the same thing neutrally; 一円たりとも払わない adds determination and solemnity. すら (“even”) can apply to any noun, not just “one”.

一人として〜ない is very close (“not a single person”), slightly less emphatic. たりとも is the strongest of the three, and it's readily used with an imperative or a prohibition.

ExpressionNuanceExample
一円も〜ないneutral一円も持っていない
一人として〜ないwritten, emphatic一人として来なかった
一円たりとも〜ないvery emphatic, resolute一円たりとも払わない
〜すら〜ない“not even” (any noun)名前すら知らない
  • 財布に一円も入っていなかった。さいふにいちえんもはいっていなかった。There wasn't a single yen in the wallet.
  • 会議には一人として反対する者はいなかった。かいぎにはひとりとしてはんたいするものはいなかった。Not a single person objected at the meeting.

Common mistakes

  • Using it with a number other than “one”: “×二人たりとも” is wrong; たりとも always applies to the minimal unit.
  • Forgetting the negative: たりとも requires a negative sentence, a prohibition or an impossibility.
  • Using it for an ordinary small quantity: it expresses strong determination, not a mere “none”.
