Won't get away without: 〜ずにはすまない

Verb ない-form without ない + ずにはすまない(する → せずにはすまない)/〜ないではすまない

Verb (ない-base) + ずにはすまない, する → せずにはすまない: the situation or morality demands X, with no escape. Not to be confused with ずにはいられない (urge) and ずにはおかない (certain effect).

In short

〜ずにはすまない: “you won't get away without doing X”; the situation, morality or social convention demands X, and there's no escaping it (謝らずにはすまない, “you'll have to apologise”). A more spoken variant: 〜ないではすまない. する becomes せずにはすまない. Written or formal spoken style.

  • 人を傷つけたのだから、謝らずにはすまないだろう。ひとをきずつけたのだから、あやまらずにはすまないだろう。Since you hurt someone, you won't get away without apologising.
  • これだけの損害を出した以上、社長も責任を取らずにはすまない。これだけのそんがいをだしたいじょう、しゃちょうもせきにんをとらずにはすまない。After losses on this scale, even the CEO won't escape taking responsibility.
  • 大事な書類をなくしたのだから、上司に報告せずにはすまない。だいじなしょるいをなくしたのだから、じょうしにほうこくせずにはすまない。I've lost an important document, so I'll have to report it to my boss.

The basics

すむ (済む) means “to be settled, to be over with”. 〜ずにはすまない: “without doing X, the matter won't be settled”. It isn't that the subject wants to do X: it's the situation, morality, propriety or other people that demand it.

It's typically used for apologies, explanations, compensation, a resignation: the social obligations that follow a wrongdoing.

How to form it

Take the ない-base of the verb (without ない) and add ずにはすまない. する becomes せずにはすまない. The variant 〜ないではすまない is a little more spoken. With a noun, you say 〜なしにはすまない or 〜ではすまない (“won't stop at”).

すまない, いられない, おかない or ざるを得ない?

〜ずにはいられない: an inner urge, you can't help it (笑わずにはいられない). 〜ずにはおかない: a will or an inevitable effect, often with a causative (感動させずにはおかない, “can't fail to move”). 〜ずにはすまない: an obligation coming from the situation or from society.

〜ざるを得ない expresses a constraint the subject reluctantly accepts; 〜なければならない is neutral obligation. ずにはすまない stresses that there's no other way out.

Common mistakes

  • Writing “×しずにはすまない”: the form of する is せず, so it's せずにはすまない.
  • Confusing it with ずにはいられない: すまない comes from an external obligation, いられない from an irresistible urge.
  • Using it for an everyday duty with nothing at stake: it assumes a situation (often a wrongdoing) that makes X unavoidable.
