In line with, in accordance with: 〜に即して/〜にのっとって

Noun + に即して/に即した/にのっとって

Noun + に即して: sticking to reality, to the facts. Noun + にのっとって: respecting a rule, a law, a tradition. Before a noun: に即した, にのっとった. Legal and administrative style.

In short

〜に即して: acting in close keeping with the facts, reality or the concrete situation (事実に即して, “sticking to the facts”); in practice, it's also very often used with a rule (法律に即して). 〜にのっとって: acting in accordance with a rule, a law, a tradition, an established model (伝統にのっとって, “according to tradition”). Two written constructions, common in legal and administrative texts.

  • 報告書は事実に即して書かなければならない。ほうこくしょはじじつにそくしてかかなければならない。A report must be written sticking strictly to the facts.
  • 式は古来の伝統にのっとって厳かに執り行われた。しきはこらいのでんとうにのっとっておごそかにとりおこなわれた。The ceremony was solemnly conducted according to age-old tradition.
  • 地域の実情に即した支援策が求められている。ちいきのじつじょうにそくしたしえんさくがもとめられている。Support measures suited to local realities are called for.

The basics

Both expressions mean “in accordance with”, but they don't look in the same direction. 即する means “to stick closely to, to fit”: 〜に即して is adapting to what actually exists (the facts, reality, the situation). のっとる (則る) means “to take as a model”: 〜にのっとって is following an established norm (a law, a regulation, a tradition, a rite).

Both belong to written language: reports, regulations, accounts of ceremonies.

How to form it

Noun + に即して / にのっとって before a verb; に即した / にのっとった before a noun. のっとって is often written in kana, or with the kanji 則 (則って).

FormBeforeExample
Noun + に即してa verb実情に即して判断する
Noun + に即したa noun現実に即した計画
Noun + にのっとってa verb規則にのっとって処理する
Noun + にのっとったa noun伝統にのっとった儀式
  • 現実に即した計画を立てなければ、絵に描いた餅に終わる。げんじつにそくしたけいかくをたてなければ、えにかいたもちにおわる。If you don't draw up a realistic plan, it'll remain pie in the sky.
  • これは伝統にのっとった神道の儀式だ。これはでんとうにのっとったしんとうのぎしきだ。This is a Shintō rite in keeping with tradition.

With に沿って and に基づいて

に沿って (N2) means “following” a line, a plan, wishes (方針に沿って, ご希望に沿って): it's more flexible and more common. に基づいて (N3) indicates the basis or source you rely on (データに基づいて).

に即して stresses fitting reality; にのっとって stresses respecting a norm. If you can say “adapting to”, it's 即して; if you can say “in compliance with”, it's のっとって. Be aware, though, that the line is blurred in real usage: you very often read 法律に即して or ルールに即して meaning “in accordance with the law, the rules”. The reverse doesn't work: にのっとって isn't used with a concrete reality.

ExpressionReferenceExample
〜に即してreality, the facts (and often also a rule)事実に即して
〜にのっとってa rule, a law, a tradition法にのっとって
〜に沿ってa plan, a wish, a lineご要望に沿って
〜に基づいてdata, a source調査に基づいて
  • お客様のご要望に沿って、デザインを変更しました。おきゃくさまのごようぼうにそって、でざいんをへんこうしました。We changed the design in line with the customer's wishes.
  • この記事は最新のデータに基づいて書かれている。このきじはさいしんのでーたにもとづいてかかれている。This article is based on the latest data.

Common mistakes

  • Inventing an over-strict kanji rule: dictionaries distinguish 即して (sticking to reality) and 則して (conforming to a norm, 規則に則して), both read そくして. But 則して is rare and its use wavers; in practice, 即して is used in both senses. For a norm, the safest construction remains にのっとって (則って).
  • Using にのっとって with a concrete situation: “×現場の状況にのっとって” doesn't work, since a situation isn't a rule; you say 状況に即して.
  • Using them in everyday speech: for “according to plan” in daily life, 〜に沿って or 〜どおりに is enough.
