No need to: 〜までもない

動詞辞書形 + までもない/までもなく

Dictionary form + までもない / までもなく: “no need to, it goes without saying”. 言うまでもなく = “needless to say”.

In short

〜までもない says there's no need to go as far as doing something, because it's obvious or too simple: わざわざ行くまでもない (no point going specially). Its adverbial form 言うまでもなく (“needless to say”) is one of the most frequent expressions in formal writing.

  • 言うまでもなく、健康は何よりも大切だ。いうまでもなく、けんこうはなによりもたいせつだ。Needless to say, health comes before everything.
  • こんな簡単な修理なら、業者を呼ぶまでもない。こんなかんたんなしゅうりなら、ぎょうしゃをよぶまでもない。For a repair this simple, there's no need to call in a professional.
  • 結果は聞くまでもない。彼の顔を見れば分かる。けっかはきくまでもない。かれのかおをみればわかる。No need to ask how it went: one look at his face tells you.

The basics

まで means “up to”, も “even”: 〜までもない, “it isn't even necessary to go as far as doing X”. The matter is so clear or so simple that the action would be superfluous.

言うまでもない (“it goes without saying”) is by far the most frequent use. At the start of a sentence, 言うまでもなく introduces something obvious that you mention all the same — English “needless to say”.

The sentence, piece by piece
業者をa professional (object)

  • grammatical form
  • そんなことは、子どもでも分かる。説明するまでもない。そんなことは、こどもでもわかる。せつめいするまでもない。Even a child understands that. There's no need to explain it.
  • 改めて言うまでもないが、締め切りは金曜日だ。あらためていうまでもないが、しめきりはきんようびだ。I hardly need to remind you, but the deadline is Friday.

How to form it

Verb in the dictionary form + までもない (end of sentence, or before が); + までもなく (adverb, at the start or in the middle of a sentence); + までもないこと (noun).

FormPositionExample
〜までもないend of sentenceわざわざ行くまでもない
〜までもなくadverb言うまでもなく、安全が第一だ
〜までもないことbefore a noun言うまでもないことだが
  • 電話で済むことだから、わざわざ行くまでもない。でんわですむことだから、わざわざいくまでもない。It can be sorted out by phone, so there's no need to go there specially.

までもない, ことはない, 必要はない, には及ばない

〜ことはない (N3) is advice, often meant to reassure: 心配することはない (don't worry). 〜必要はない is neutral and factual. 〜には及ばない is polite and often addressed to the listener (お越しいただくには及びません).

〜までもない stresses obviousness: the action would be superfluous, so clear or easy is the matter.

  • そんなに心配することはないよ。そんなにしんぱいすることはないよ。There's no need to worry so much.
  • わざわざお越しいただくには及びません。わざわざおこしいただくにはおよびません。Please don't trouble yourself to come.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing it with 〜ないまでも (“if not X, at least”): 言うまでもない ≠ 言わないまでも.
  • Putting the verb in the past or in ない: it's always the dictionary form (“×言ったまでもない”).
  • Translating 言うまでもなく as “not to mention”: it's “needless to say”.
