No matter, even if: 〜(よ)うとも

動詞意向形・い形かろう + とも

Volitional (〜かろう, であろう) + とも: “even if, no matter”, the solemn version of 〜ても. The second half expresses a will or a fact that won't change.

In short

Volitional + とも means “even if, no matter”: 何があろうとも (come what may), どんなに辛かろうとも (however hard it may be). The second half asserts a firm will or a fact that won't change. It's the written, solemn version of 〜ても, heard in speeches, oaths and literary texts.

  • 何があろうとも、私はあなたの味方だ。なにがあろうとも、わたしはあなたのみかただ。Come what may, I'm on your side.
  • どんなに辛かろうとも、最後までやり遂げるつもりだ。どんなにつらかろうとも、さいごまでやりとげるつもりだ。However hard it may be, I intend to see it through to the end.
  • たとえ世界中が反対しようとも、私の決心は変わらない。たとえせかいじゅうがはんたいしようとも、わたしのけっしんはかわらない。Even if the whole world opposes it, my decision won't change.

The basics

The volitional (あろう, しよう) is used here to set up a hypothesis: “suppose X happens”. とも adds concession: “even then”. The whole gives a very firm “even if”, almost an oath — English “come what may”, “be that as it may”.

The second half doesn't budge: a decision (変わらない), a will (やり抜く), a principle (規則は規則だ). It's this contrast that gives the sentence its force.

Even if the whole world opposes it, my decision won't change.

How to form it

Put the word in the volitional, then とも. For い-adjectives, the classical volitional is 〜かろう. For nouns and な-adjectives, you go through であろう.

BaseVolitional+ とも
group 1 verb: あるあろう何があろうとも
group 2 verb: 止める止めよう誰が止めようとも
するしよう反対しようとも
い-adj.: 辛い辛かろうどんなに辛かろうとも
noun / な-adj.であろう誰であろうとも、困難であろうとも
  • いかに困難であろうとも、この計画は実行しなければならない。いかにこんなんであろうとも、このけいかくはじっこうしなければならない。However difficult it may be, this plan must be carried out.

ようとも, ても, ようが, としても

〜ても is the everyday form. 〜ようとも says the same thing solemnly. 〜ようが has the same meaning but a sharper tone, sometimes a little defiant in speech (誰が何と言おうが). 〜としても (N3) considers a hypothesis without the force of an oath.

FormRegisterExample
〜てもeveryday何があっても
〜ようがsharp, spoken or written誰が何と言おうが
〜ようともwritten, solemn何があろうとも
〜としてもneutral hypothesis失敗したとしても
  • 誰が何と言おうが、僕は行くよ。だれがなんといおうが、ぼくはいくよ。Whatever anyone says, I'm going.
  • たとえ失敗したとしても、挑戦したことに意味がある。たとえしっぱいしたとしても、ちょうせんしたことにいみがある。Even if it fails, there's value in having tried.

Common mistakes

  • Starting from the ば- or て-form: “×反対すればとも” is wrong; you need the volitional (反対しようとも).
  • Forming the い-adjective like a verb: it's 辛かろうとも, not “×辛いようとも”.
  • Using it in ordinary conversation: “I'll come even if it rains” is 雨が降っても行くよ.
