Whether or not: 〜(よ)うが〜まいが
動詞意向形 + が + 動詞辞書形 + まいが
Volitional + が + verb + まい + が (or と…と): “whether you do X or not, it doesn't matter”. Watch how まい is formed: 行くまい, 見まい, するまい / すまい, 来まい.
In short
You put a verb's volitional side by side with its negative form in まい: 降ろうが降るまいが = “whether it rains or not”. The second half says it makes no difference. Both が can be replaced with と (降ろうと降るまいと). Written register or careful speech, often with a determined tone.
- 雨が降ろうが降るまいが、試合は行われる。あめがふろうがふるまいが、しあいはおこなわれる。Whether it rains or not, the match will go ahead.
- 君が賛成しようがするまいが、私は留学するつもりだ。きみがさんせいしようがするまいが、わたしはりゅうがくするつもりだ。Whether you agree or not, I intend to go and study abroad.
- 信じようと信じまいと、これは本当にあった話だ。しんじようとしんじまいと、これはほんとうにあったはなしだ。Believe it or not, this is a true story.
The basics
The volitional (降ろう) considers the action happening; まい (a classical negative of will or supposition) considers it not happening. Placing them side by side sweeps away both possibilities: “whether X or not X”.
The conclusion is always “it makes no difference”: a decision already taken, an established fact, or 関係ない, 自由だ.
Whether it rains or not, the match will go ahead.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 好きだろうが嫌いだろうが、仕事はやらなければならない。すきだろうがきらいだろうが、しごとはやらなければならない。Like it or not, the work has to be done.
- 彼が謝ろうが謝るまいが、私はもう許さない。かれがあやまろうがあやまるまいが、わたしはもうゆるさない。Whether he apologises or not, I won't forgive him any more.
How to form まい
This is the tricky part. Group 1: dictionary form + まい (行くまい). Group 2: stem + まい or dictionary form + まい (見まい / 見るまい). する: するまい or すまい. 来る: 来まい (こまい) or 来るまい.
The volitional, on the other hand, is regular:
Whether anyone watches or not, the programme will be broadcast.
ようがまいが, ても〜なくても, にしろ〜にしろ
〜ても〜なくても says the same thing in everyday speech: 行っても行かなくても. 〜にしろ〜にしろ (N2) contrasts two named choices (行くにしろ行かないにしろ). 〜ようが〜まいが is firmer, almost defiant: you dismiss any objection in advance.
You can use と instead of が (しようとするまいと), but don't mix them: “×しようがするまいと” sounds wrong.
- 行っても行かなくても、結果は同じだ。いってもいかなくても、けっかはおなじだ。Whether you go or not, the result will be the same.
- 参加するにしろしないにしろ、返事はください。さんかするにしろしないにしろ、へんじはください。Whether you're taking part or not, please give me an answer.
Common mistakes
- Using ない instead of まい: “×降ろうが降らないが” is incorrect.
- Forming まい wrongly with する: in careful writing, it's するまい or すまい. しようがしまいが is heard a lot in speech, but remains colloquial.
- Mixing が and と in the same pair.
