Without even: 〜ずして

動詞ない形 + ずして

Verb in ない without ない + ずして: “without doing”, the written, sententious form of 〜ないで. Followed by a negative: an indispensable condition (努力せずして成功はない).

In short

〜ずして is the written, classical form of 〜ないで: “without doing”. You find it in maxims and elevated sentences: 戦わずして勝つ (to win without fighting), 労せずして手に入れる (to obtain without effort). Followed by a negative, it expresses an indispensable condition: 努力せずして成功はない, “without effort, no success”.

  • 戦わずして勝つのが、最善の策だ。たたかわずしてかつのが、さいぜんのさくだ。To win without fighting — that's the best strategy.
  • 労せずして大金を手に入れようなんて、虫のいい話だ。ろうせずしてたいきんをてにいれようなんて、むしのいいはなしだ。Wanting to make a fortune without lifting a finger is a bit much.
  • 期せずして、二人は同じ答えを出した。きせずして、ふたりはおなじこたえをだした。Without any prior agreement, the two of them came up with the same answer.

The basics

ず is the classical negative, して the linking marker. 〜ずして = “by not doing”, in other words “without doing”. The meaning is that of 〜ないで or 〜ずに, but the tone is grave and sententious, almost proverbial.

Sun Tzu's famous maxim from The Art of War, 戦わずして勝つ, shows the use well: a general truth, stated forcefully.

The sentence, piece by piece
戦わfight (ない-base)
ずしてwithout (written)
勝つwin
のがthe act of (subject)
最善の策だis the best strategy

Winning without fighting is the best strategy.

  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • particle
  • noun
  • 彼は一言も語らずして去っていった。かれはひとこともかたらずしてさっていった。He left without saying a single word.
  • 相手チームは、戦わずして負けを認めた。あいてちーむは、たたかわずしてまけをみとめた。The opposing team conceded defeat without even playing.

How to form it

Verb in ない, without ない, + ずして. する becomes せずして. A few fixed formulas are worth knowing.

FormMeaningExample
戦わずしてwithout fighting戦わずして勝つ
労せずしてwithout effort労せずして手に入れる
期せずしてwithout planning it, by chance期せずして意見が一致した
努力せずして〜ないwithout effort, no…努力せずして成功はない
  • 期せずして、会場から大きな拍手がわき起こった。きせずして、かいじょうからおおきなはくしゅがわきおこった。Quite unexpectedly, the hall burst into loud applause.

Two readings: “without” and “not without”

Followed by an affirmative sentence, ずして simply means “without”: 労せずして手に入れる, to obtain without effort.

Followed by a negative, it sets a condition: 努力せずして成功はない, “without effort, no success” — like English “no pain, no gain”. For a noun, you use 〜なくして: 努力なくして成功なし.

In everyday life, people say 〜ないで or 〜ずに. ずして saves its effect for speeches, editorials and maxims.

  • 練習せずして上達することはない。れんしゅうせずしてじょうたつすることはない。You don't improve without practising.
  • 皆様の協力なくして、この成功はありませんでした。みなさまのきょうりょくなくして、このせいこうはありませんでした。Without the support of every one of you, this success would not have been possible.

Common mistakes

  • Writing “×しずして”: for する, it's せずして.
  • Putting ずして after a noun: “×努力ずして”. With a noun, it's 努力なくして; with the verb, 努力せずして.
  • Using it in ordinary conversation (“×朝ご飯を食べずして来た”): people say 食べないで / 食べずに.
