Whether or not: 〜かどうか
Plain form + か どうか + verb
Plain form + か どうか (or 〜か 〜ないか) embeds a yes/no question: “whether… or not”. No だ after a noun. With a question word, just か.
In short
〜かどうか embeds a yes/no question in a sentence: あした 来るか どうか わかりません (I don't know whether he'll come tomorrow). It's the “whether” or “if” of “I wonder if…”. For an open question with a question word (who, where, when), use just か, seen in the previous point.
- あした 来るか どうか わかりません。あした くるか どうか わかりません。I don't know whether he'll come tomorrow.
- この 店が 日曜日に 開いて いるか どうか 聞きました。この みせが にちようびに あいて いるか どうか ききました。I asked whether the shop was open on Sundays.
- その 話が 本当か どうか、だれも 知りません。その はなしが ほんとうか どうか、だれも しりません。Nobody knows whether that story is true.
- 行くか 行かないか、早く 決めて ください。いくか いかないか、はやく きめて ください。Hurry up and decide whether you're going or not.
The basics
A closed question is answered with yes or no: “Is he coming tomorrow?”. To slip it into a sentence (“I don't know whether he's coming tomorrow”), put it in the plain form and add か どうか, literally “whether… or how”. Then comes the main verb: わかる, 知る, 聞く, 調べる, 決める…
I don't know whether he'll come tomorrow.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- この 服が 似合うか どうか、妹に 聞きました。この ふくが にあうか どうか、いもうとに ききました。I asked my little sister whether this outfit suited me.
- 窓を 閉めたか どうか、覚えて いない。まどを しめたか どうか、おぼえて いない。I can't remember whether I shut the window.
How to form it
As with open questions: plain form, no です or ます. After a noun or a な-adjective, no だ in the present: 本当か どうか, 静かか どうか.
| Type | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| verb | 来るか どうか | whether he comes or not |
| verb in the past | 来たか どうか | whether he came or not |
| い-adjective | おいしいか どうか | whether it's good or not |
| な-adjective | 静かか どうか | whether it's quiet or not |
| noun | 本当か どうか | whether it's true or not |
- その ホテルが 静かか どうか、ネットで 調べました。その ホテルが しずかか どうか、ネットで しらべました。I checked online whether that hotel was quiet.
- おいしいか どうか、食べなければ わからない。おいしいか どうか、たべなければ わからない。You can't tell whether it's good without tasting it.
The variant 〜か 〜ないか
You can also put both options side by side: 行くか 行かないか (whether to go or not). The meaning is the same as 行くか どうか, with a more spoken, more direct touch, often to push someone to choose.
- 買うか 買わないか、まだ 迷って います。かうか かわないか、まだ まよって います。I still can't make up my mind whether to buy it or not.
Open or closed question?
The test is simple. If there's a question word (何, だれ, どこ, いつ, どう, いくら…), it's an open question: just か. If there isn't one, it's a yes/no question: か どうか. You never mix the two.
| Question | Type | Embedded |
|---|---|---|
| だれが 来ますか | open | だれが 来るか わからない |
| 田中さんは 来ますか | closed | 田中さんが 来るか どうか わからない |
| いくらですか | open | いくらか 聞いた |
| 高いですか | closed | 高いか どうか 聞いた |
- どこで 会うか、会うか どうかも まだ 決めて いない。どこで あうか、あうか どうかも まだ きめて いない。We haven't decided where to meet yet, or even whether we're meeting.
Common mistakes
- Using a question word with かどうか: “何時に 来るか どうか” is wrong; it's 何時に 来るか.
- Keeping だ after a noun: “学生だか どうか” is wrong; say 学生か どうか.
- Translating the “if” of “I don't know if…” with たら or ば: those are conditions (“if it happens”), not questions.
