A question inside a sentence: question word + か
Question word + plain form + か + verb
Question word + plain form + か + verb (わかる, 知って いる, 教える…) embeds an open question in a sentence. No です/ます, and no だ after a noun.
In short
To slip a question into a sentence (“Do you know what time it starts?”, “I don't know who's coming”), put the question in the plain form, close it with か, then add the main verb: 何時に 始まるか 知って いますか. After a noun, だ disappears: だれか わからない.
- 会議が 何時に 始まるか 知って いますか。かいぎが なんじに はじまるか しって いますか。Do you know what time the meeting starts?
- どこに 住んで いるか 教えて ください。どこに すんで いるか おしえて ください。Please tell me where you live.
- だれが 来るか わかりません。だれが くるか わかりません。I don't know who's coming.
- あの 人が だれか 知って いますか。あの ひとが だれか しって いますか。Do you know who that person is?
The basics
A direct question ends in か: 会議は 何時に 始まりますか. To fit it into a bigger sentence, switch it to the plain form and follow it directly with the main verb: わかる, 知って いる, 教える, 覚えて いる, 聞く, 調べる…
The か stays: it shows that this chunk is a question. In English, that's the job of “if”, “where”, “who”, “what” in “I don't know where he lives”, along with the change in word order (“where he lives”, not “where does he live”).
Do you know what time the meeting starts?
- noun
- verb
- particle
- なんばまで どの 電車に 乗るか 聞きました。なんばまで どの でんしゃに のるか ききました。I asked which train to take to Namba.
- この ことばが どういう 意味か 調べて ください。この ことばが どういう いみか しらべて ください。Look up what this word means.
How to form it
The content of the question switches to the plain form: no です, no ます. After a noun or a な-adjective, だ disappears in the present: だれか, なぜか, どんな 人か. In the past, だった stays.
| Direct question | Embedded question |
|---|---|
| 何時に 来ますか | 何時に 来るか わからない |
| どこで 買いましたか | どこで 買ったか 覚えて いない |
| あの 人は だれですか | あの 人が だれか 知って いる? |
| いくらでしたか | いくらだったか わすれた |
- きのうの ばんごはんが 何だったか 覚えて いない。きのうの ばんごはんが なんだったか おぼえて いない。I can't remember what I had for dinner last night.
- いつ 日本へ 行くか まだ わかりません。いつ にほんへ いくか まだ わかりません。I don't know yet when I'll go to Japan.
何か わからない ≠ 何か ありますか
At N5, you saw 何か (something) and だれか (someone): 何か ありますか (is there anything?). Here, か isn't attached to the question word; it closes a question: 何か わからない means “I don't know what it is”. You can tell the difference by what follows: a verb of knowing (わかる, 知る) after an embedded question, or an ordinary verb after “something”.
- これが 何か わかりますか。これが なにか わかりますか。Do you know what this is?
- 何か 食べたい。なにか たべたい。I want to eat something.
Common mistakes
- Keeping です or ます inside the question: “何時に 来ますか わからない” is wrong; say 何時に 来るか わからない.
- Forgetting か: “どこに 住んで いる 知って いますか” doesn't work.
- Keeping だ after a noun: the basic form is だれか (“だれだか” is heard mostly in casual speech).
- Mixing up 何か わからない (I don't know what it is) and 何か ありますか (is there anything?).
