Giving a reason gently: 〜ので
Plain form + ので; noun/な-adj + なので
Plain form + ので (noun/な-adj + なので) gives an objective, polite cause, ideal for apologising or asking. Before an invitation or an order, から is preferred.
In short
〜ので gives a cause, like から, but in a more objective and softer tone: the reason is presented as a fact, not as an argument. It's the ideal form for apologising, politely explaining yourself or asking for something: 道が 込んで いたので、遅れました (the roads were busy, so I'm late).
- 道が 込んで いたので、遅れました。みちが こんで いたので、おくれました。The roads were busy, so I'm late.
- 頭が 痛いので、早く 帰っても いいですか。あたまが いたいので、はやく かえっても いいですか。I have a headache — would it be all right if I went home early?
- あしたは 休みなので、ゆっくり 寝ます。あしたは やすみなので、ゆっくり ねます。I'm off tomorrow, so I'm going to sleep in.
- この 部屋は 静かなので、よく 勉強できます。この へやは しずかなので、よく べんきょうできます。This room is quiet, so it's easy to study in.
The basics
Like から (seen at N5), ので comes after the cause, and the result follows. But ので presents the cause as an objective circumstance, almost beyond your control. That's why it sounds more polite and softer: you aren't arguing, you're explaining. It's a bit like the difference between “because” and “since” or “as” in English.
The roads were busy, so I'm late.
- noun
- verb
- particle
- 電車が 遅れたので、遅刻しました。でんしゃが おくれたので、ちこくしました。The train was delayed, so I was late.
- よく わからないので、もう 一度 言って ください。よく わからないので、もう いちど いって ください。I didn't quite understand — could you say it again?
How to form it
Add ので to the plain form. As with 〜んです, the だ of nouns and な-adjectives becomes な: 学生なので, 静かなので. In very polite speech, you'll also hear 〜ますので, 〜ですので.
| Type | Present | Negative | Past |
|---|---|---|---|
| verb | あるので | ないので | あったので |
| い-adjective | 高いので | 高くないので | 高かったので |
| な-adjective | 静かなので | 静かじゃないので | 静かだったので |
| noun | 休みなので | 休みじゃないので | 休みだったので |
- まだ 学生なので、お金が ありません。まだ がくせいなので、おかねが ありません。I'm still a student, so I don't have any money.
- きのうは 雨だったので、出かけませんでした。きのうは あめだったので、でかけませんでした。It was raining yesterday, so I didn't go out.
ので or から?
Often both work. But から is more subjective and more direct: you put forward your reason, sometimes to justify yourself firmly. ので softens things; it suits apologies, polite requests and explanations to a superior.
Before an order, an invitation or a personal suggestion (〜しろ, 〜よう, 〜ましょう), から is preferred: 時間が ないから、早く 行こう. ので would sound oddly detached there. With a polite request (〜て ください, 〜ても いいですか), ので works very well.
| Situation | Better | Example |
|---|---|---|
| apology, polite explanation | ので | 電車が 遅れたので、遅刻しました |
| polite request | ので | 頭が 痛いので、休んでも いいですか |
| invitation, suggestion | から | おそいから、帰ろう |
| strong opinion | から | 高いから、買わない! |
- おそいから、もう 帰ろう。おそいから、もう かえろう。It's late, let's go home.
なので at the start of a sentence
In speech, なので is also used at the start of a sentence to mean “so, that's why”, picking up the previous sentence. It's very common in polite conversation.
- あしたは 早く 出かけます。なので、今日は 早く 寝ます。あしたは はやく でかけます。なので、きょうは はやく ねます。I'm leaving early tomorrow. So I'm going to bed early tonight.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting な: “学生ので” and “静かので” are wrong; say 学生なので, 静かなので.
- Using ので before an order or an invitation between friends: 早く 行こう is justified with から.
- Thinking から and ので are always interchangeable: から argues, ので explains gently.
