Being able to do: 〜ことができる
Dictionary form + ことが できます/noun + が できます
Dictionary + ことが できます (or noun + が できます) = can do, be able or allowed to. Negative with は: a polite ban. More formal than the potential form.
In short
〜ことが できます expresses an ability (knowing how to) or a possibility (being allowed to, having the chance to): 姉は ピアノを ひく ことが できます, ここで 写真を とる ことは できません. With a noun, it's even simpler: 日本語が できます. The register is a little more formal than the potential form, which comes right after.
- 姉は ピアノを ひく ことが できます。あねは ピアノを ひく ことが できます。My big sister can play the piano.
- ここで 写真を とる ことは できません。ここで しゃしんを とる ことは できません。Taking photos isn't allowed here.
- 田中さんは 中国語が できます。たなかさんは ちゅうごくごが できます。Mr Tanaka speaks Chinese.
- この カードで 電車に 乗る ことが できます。この カードで でんしゃに のる ことが できます。You can take the train with this card.
The basics
できる means “to be possible, to be able to”. What you can do is its subject, with が. For an action, you first turn it into a noun with こと (as in the 〜の・〜こと point): ピアノを ひく こと → ピアノを ひく ことが できる.
My big sister can play the piano.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 弟は まだ 自転車に 乗る ことが できません。おとうとは まだ じてんしゃに のる ことが できません。My little brother can't ride a bike yet.
- あの 図書館では 本を 二週間 借りる ことが できます。あの としょかんでは ほんを にしゅうかん かりる ことが できます。At this library, you can borrow books for two weeks.
How to form it
Dictionary-form verb + ことが できる. With a noun (a language, a sport, an activity), just use が できる. できる conjugates like a group 2 verb.
| Form | With a verb | With a noun |
|---|---|---|
| present | およぐ ことが できます | テニスが できます |
| negative | およぐ ことが できません | テニスが できません |
| past | およぐ ことが できました | テニスが できました |
| past negative | およぐ ことが できませんでした | テニスが できませんでした |
- きのうは いそがしくて、寝る ことが できませんでした。きのうは いそがしくて、ねる ことが できませんでした。I was so busy yesterday that I couldn't sleep.
- 山田さんは 料理が よく できます。やまださんは りょうりが よく できます。Ms Yamada is a very good cook.
Ability or permission?
Depending on the context, 〜ことが できる talks about a personal ability (being able to swim) or an outside possibility: a rule, a service, an opportunity — much like English “can” covers both. In the negative, with は, it's the polite way of announcing a ban: ここで たばこを 吸う ことは できません.
- この 駅で 特急に 乗りかえる ことが できます。この えきで とっきゅうに のりかえる ことが できます。You can change to the express at this station.
- ここに 車を 止める ことは できません。ここに くるまを とめる ことは できません。Parking here is not allowed.
The other meanings of できる
できる also has other common meanings, without こと: “to be ready” (ごはんが できたよ: dinner's ready), “to be built, to appear” (駅の 前に 新しい 店が できた: a new shop has opened in front of the station). The context decides.
Later on, you'll see the potential form (話せる, 食べられる), which is shorter and more conversational and says the same thing: 日本語を 話す ことが できる = 日本語が 話せる.
- うめだに 大きい デパートが できました。うめだに おおきい デパートが できました。A big department store has opened in Umeda.
Common mistakes
- Putting を before できる: “日本語を できます” is wrong; it's 日本語が できます.
- Using the ます-form before こと: “話します ことが” is wrong; it's 話す ことが.
- Forgetting こと: “およぐが できる” isn't said; you need およぐ ことが できる.
- Always reading できた as “I was able to”: ごはんが できた means “dinner's ready”.
