Service-industry politeness: ございます・でございます
ございます(あります), でございます(です)
ございます = very polite あります, でございます = very polite です: the language of service, for things. For people: いらっしゃいます (the other person), おります (me).
In short
ございます is the very polite version of あります, でございます that of です. It's the language of shops, hotels and announcements: トイレは あちらに ございます. It isn't used for people: you say いらっしゃいます (the other person) or おります (me).
- トイレは あちらに ございます。といれは あちらに ございます。The toilets are over there.
- こちらが メニューで ございます。こちらが めにゅーで ございます。Here is the menu.
- 何か ご質問は ございますか。なにか ごしつもんは ございますか。Do you have any questions?
The basics
ございます belongs to ていねいご, politeness towards the listener: it neither raises nor lowers anyone; it simply makes the sentence very polite. It's the tone of an employee addressing a customer.
ございます replaces あります (there is, to be located); でございます replaces です.
The toilets are over there.
- noun
- verb
- トイレは あちらに あります。といれは あちらに あります。The toilets are over there. (polite)
- トイレは あちらに ございます。といれは あちらに ございます。The toilets are just over there. (very polite)
Three levels
The negative follows the same pattern: ありません → ございません. You often hear it in もうしわけ ございません, “I'm terribly sorry”.
| Plain | Polite | Very polite |
|---|---|---|
| ある | あります | ございます |
| ない | ありません | ございません |
| だ | です | でございます |
| ではない | では ありません | では ございません |
- ただいま、赤い ものは ございません。ただいま、あかい ものは ございません。We don't have anything in red at the moment.
- お会計は 三千円で ございます。おかいけいは さんぜんえんで ございます。That comes to three thousand yen.
What about people?
ございます isn't used for people. For the customer, use そんけいご: 田中さまで いらっしゃいますか (“would you be Mr Tanaka?”). For yourself or your own people, けんじょうご: 田中は おります.
| Subject | There is / is located | It is… |
|---|---|---|
| object, place | ございます | でございます |
| the customer, the other person | いらっしゃいます | で いらっしゃいます |
| me, my side | おります | で ございます (about yourself: 田中で ございます) |
- 失礼ですが、山田さまで いらっしゃいますか。しつれいですが、やまださまで いらっしゃいますか。Excuse me, would you be Ms Yamada?
- はい、山田で ございます。はい、やまだで ございます。Yes, this is Yamada speaking.
Set phrases
You've been using ございます since day one without knowing it: おはよう ございます, ありがとう ございます, おめでとう ございます. They're old forms of い-adjectives before ございます (はやい → はよう, ありがたい → ありがとう, めでたい → めでとう). They're fixed: learn them as they are.
- おたんじょうび おめでとう ございます。おたんじょうび おめでとう ございます。Happy birthday.
- お電話 ありがとう ございます。おでんわ ありがとう ございます。Thank you for calling. (on the phone, at a company)
Common mistakes
- Asking a customer “田中さまで ございますか”: でございます doesn't raise the other person; it's で いらっしゃいますか.
- Using ございます for a person: “田中は ございます” is wrong; it's おります.
- Using it among friends: you'll sound like a butler.
