Doing something humbly for someone: お〜する
お + stem + する/いたす(ご + noun + する)
お + stem + する/いたす (ご + noun + する): I act humbly for someone I respect (お持ちします, ごあんないします). Never for the other person's action.
In short
お〜する is the regular form of けんじょうご: you do something for someone you respect. おにもつを お持ちします, “let me carry your bags”. お〜いたします is even more humble.
- おにもつを お持ちします。おにもつを おもちします。Let me carry your bags.
- 駅まで ごあんないします。えきまで ごあんないします。I'll show you to the station.
- けっかは あとで お知らせ いたします。けっかは あとで おしらせ いたします。We will let you know the results later.
The basics
The special けんじょうご verbs (参る, 申す…) only cover the most common verbs. For all the others, use the template お + stem + する. It's used when your action directly affects someone you respect: you carry their bags, you show them the way, you send them something.
Let me carry your bags.
- noun
- grammatical form
- verb
- 先生、かさを お貸し しましょうか。せんせい、かさを おかし しましょうか。Professor, shall I lend you an umbrella?
- 三時に お待ちして おります。さんじに おまちして おります。I'll be waiting for you at three.
How to form it
お + stem + する (or いたす, even more humble). For a Sino-Japanese action noun: ご + noun + する (ごあんない する, ごれんらく する). A few words are exceptions and take お: お電話 する.
| Verb | お〜する | お〜いたします |
|---|---|---|
| 持つ | お持ちする | お持ち いたします |
| 待つ | お待ちする | お待ち いたします |
| 知らせる | お知らせする | お知らせ いたします |
| 送る | お送りする | お送り いたします |
| あんないする | ごあんないする | ごあんない いたします |
| 電話する | お電話する | お電話 いたします |
- 駅まで ごあんないします。えきまで ごあんないします。I'll show you to the station.
- あとで ごれんらく いたします。あとで ごれんらく いたします。I'll get back in touch with you later.
When to use it, and when not
There has to be a person to honour who “receives” your action. “お食べする” isn't said: eating doesn't do anything for anyone. For your actions with no recipient, use the special verbs (いただく, 参る…) or just ます.
It's also the right way to offer a superior a service. Avoid 〜て あげる with them; it sounds condescending: “先生、持って あげます” is clumsy; say お持ちします.
| Phrase | Effect |
|---|---|
| 先生、かばんを 持って あげます | clumsy, condescending |
| 先生、かばんを お持ちします | natural and respectful |
| 先生が お持ちします | wrong: お〜する doesn't apply to the other person |
- 先生、かばんを お持ちします。せんせい、かばんを おもちします。Professor, let me carry your bag.
Common mistakes
- Applying it to the other person's action: “先生が お待ちします” is wrong; for the teacher, it's お待ちに なります.
- Mixing up お〜する (me, humble) and お〜に なる (the other person, respectful): a single に changes everything.
- Using お〜します for an action that doesn't concern anyone: “お食べします” doesn't exist.
- Offering help to a superior with 〜て あげる: go for お〜します.
