Humility about yourself: the けんじょうご verbs

参る, 申す, いたす, いただく, うかがう, はいけんする, 存じる, おる

けんじょうご = lowering your own actions: 参る, 申す, いたす, いただく, うかがう, はいけんする, 存じる, おる. Never for the other person: use the そんけいご verb.

In short

けんじょうご (humble language) does the opposite of そんけいご: instead of raising the other person, you lower your own actions (and those of your side). 田中と 申します, “my name is Tanaka”. Essential at work, on the phone and with customers.

  • はじめまして。田中と 申します。はじめまして。たなかと もうします。How do you do? My name is Tanaka.
  • あした 三時に そちらへ うかがいます。あした さんじに そちらへ うかがいます。I'll come to your office tomorrow at three.
  • 父は 今 出かけて おります。ちちは いま でかけて おります。My father is out at the moment.

The basics

With そんけいご, you raise the other person. With けんじょうご, you lower yourself: the effect is the same, the respectful distance grows. It's used for your own actions, especially when they involve the person you respect (going to see them, telling them something, receiving from them).

It also applies to “your side”: your family, or your company when you're talking to a customer.

The sentence, piece by piece
田中と“Tanaka” (quote)
申しますI say (言う in けんじょうご)

My name is Tanaka.

  • noun
  • verb
  • 田中です。たなかです。I'm Tanaka. (simply polite)
  • 田中と 申します。たなかと もうします。My name is Tanaka. (humble, for introducing yourself)

The big table: neutral, respectful, humble

So each common verb has two versions: one for the other person (そんけいご), one for yourself (けんじょうご). Learn them in pairs: it's the heart of keigo.

おります and 〜ております

おる replaces いる when talking about yourself or your own people, including in 〜て いる: 〜て おります. It's the tone of the office, the phone and letters. In front of a customer, you also talk about your colleagues and your boss with おります, without さん.

参る is also used in station announcements for an arriving train: the tone is simply very polite.

  • 父は 銀行で 働いて おります。ちちは ぎんこうで はたらいて おります。My father works at a bank.
  • 田中は ただいま 出かけて おります。たなかは ただいま でかけて おります。Tanaka is out at the moment. (said by a colleague to a customer)
  • まもなく 一ばんせんに 電車が 参ります。まもなく いちばんせんに でんしゃが まいります。A train will shortly be arriving at platform 1.

Common mistakes

  • Talking about the other person in けんじょうご: “先生が 申しました” lowers the teacher! It's 先生が おっしゃいました.
  • Saying “いたします” for someone else's action: いたす is always me (or my side).
  • Mixing up うかがう “to visit” and うかがう “to ask, to hear”: the context decides (そちらへ うかがう / お話を うかがう).
  • Adding さん to your colleague's name in front of a customer: say 田中は, not 田中さんは.
