Polite invitations: お〜ください
お + stem + ください(ご + noun + ください)
お + stem + ください (ご + noun + ください): a respectful request or invitation, the language of service. Exceptions: ごらん ください, めしあがって ください, いらっしゃって ください.
In short
お〜ください is the respectful way to ask or invite: お待ち ください, “please wait”. You hear it everywhere in stations, shops and hotels. For Sino-Japanese nouns: ご注意 ください, ご利用 ください.
- 少々 お待ち ください。しょうしょう おまち ください。Please wait a moment.
- どうぞ お入り ください。どうぞ おはいり ください。Please, come in.
- 足もとに ご注意 ください。あしもとに ごちゅうい ください。Please mind your step.
The basics
〜て ください (N5) is an everyday polite request: 待って ください, “please wait”. お〜ください raises the person you're addressing: it's the voice of staff, announcements and signs. Everything asked of a customer goes through this form — the Japanese equivalent of English “Kindly…” or “Please do…” in formal notices.

- grammatical form
- verb
- ちょっと 待って ください。ちょっと まって ください。Please wait a moment. (everyday polite)
- 少々 お待ち ください。しょうしょう おまち ください。Please wait a moment. (respectful)
How to form it
Same template as お〜になる: お + stem, then ください. For Sino-Japanese action nouns (注意, 利用, 使用), put ご before the noun: ご注意 ください. In shops, you'll also hear くださいませ, even more deferential.
| Verb | 〜て ください | お〜ください |
|---|---|---|
| 待つ | 待って ください | お待ち ください |
| 入る | 入って ください | お入り ください |
| 書く | 書いて ください | お書き ください |
| 使う | 使って ください | お使い ください |
| 注意する | 注意して ください | ご注意 ください |
| 利用する | 利用して ください | ご利用 ください |
- こちらに お名前を お書き ください。こちらに おなまえを おかき ください。Please write your name here.
- どうぞ ご利用 ください。どうぞ ごりよう ください。Please feel free to use it.
- ドアが 閉まります。ご注意 ください。どあが しまります。ごちゅうい ください。The doors are closing. Please stand clear.
The exceptions
As with お〜になる, one-syllable verbs and verbs with a special form don't fit the template. Use the そんけいご verb in the て-form + ください, or a set phrase instead.
| Verb | × avoid | ✓ correct form |
|---|---|---|
| 見る | お見 ください | ごらん ください |
| 食べる・飲む | お食べ ください | めしあがって ください |
| 来る・行く・いる | お来 ください | いらっしゃって ください |
- こちらの 地図を ごらん ください。こちらの ちずを ごらん ください。Please take a look at this map.
- どうぞ ゆっくり めしあがって ください。どうぞ ゆっくり めしあがって ください。Please, take your time and enjoy your meal.
Common mistakes
- Saying “お見 ください” or “お待って ください”: for seeing, it's ごらん ください; and you use the stem, without て: お待ち ください.
- Mixing up お and ご: ご注意 (Sino-Japanese word), お待ち (native Japanese verb).
- Saying “ご注意して ください”: you hear it everywhere, even in announcements, but it's wrong in standard keigo. ご〜する is a humble form (for your own actions, covered later): you can't ask someone else to do it. Say ご注意 ください (respectful) or 注意して ください (simply polite).
- Using お〜ください among friends: you'll sound like a department-store employee.
