Respect through the passive form: 〜れる・〜られる

Passive form with a respectful meaning

The passive form (〜れる・〜られる) also serves as light そんけいご: 社長が 来られる, 先生が 書かれた 本. Lighter than お〜になる; the context tells it apart from the passive.

In short

The passive form (書かれる, 来られる) is also used to honour someone's action: 社長は 何時に 来られますか. It's a lighter respect than お〜になる, very common at work, in writing and in the media.

  • 社長は 何時に 来られますか。しゃちょうは なんじに こられますか。What time will the president be arriving?
  • これは 先生が 書かれた 本です。これは せんせいが かかれた ほんです。This is a book written by the professor.
  • 田中先生は 来年 アメリカへ 行かれます。たなかせんせいは らいねん あめりかへ いかれます。Professor Tanaka is going to the United States next year.

The basics

You know the passive form: 書かれる, 読まれる, 来られる. Used for the action of someone you respect, it loses its passive meaning and becomes a mark of respect. 先生が 書かれた 本 has nothing passive about it: it's simply “the book the professor wrote”, said respectfully.

It's the easiest form of そんけいご: no verbs to learn, you just need to be able to make the passive.

The sentence, piece by piece
社長はthe president (person being honoured)
何時にat what time
来られますかis he coming? (来る, passive form = respect)

What time will the president be arriving?

  • noun
  • verb
  • 先生は 毎朝 新聞を 読まれます。せんせいは まいあさ しんぶんを よまれます。The professor reads the newspaper every morning.
  • 山田さんは ゴルフを されますか。やまださんは ごるふを されますか。Do you play golf, Mr Yamada?

Three degrees of respect

〜れる・〜られる is a notch above plain ます, but below お〜になる and the special verbs. You hear it a lot between colleagues, on the TV news and in business letters.

VerbPolite〜れる・〜られるMost respectful
帰る帰ります帰られますお帰りに なります

来る来ます来られますいらっしゃいます

  • 部長は もう 帰られました。ぶちょうは もう かえられました。The manager has already gone home. (light respect)
  • 部長は もう お帰りに なりました。ぶちょうは もう おかえりに なりました。The manager has already gone home. (more respectful)

Respect, passive or potential? The context decides

The same form can be passive, respectful and, for group 2 verbs and 来る, potential. 来られますか can mean “are you coming?” or “can you come?”. The clues: the subject is someone you respect, there's no doer marked with に, and the sentence has no passive meaning.

  • 先生に しかられました。せんせいに しかられました。I got told off by the teacher. (passive)
  • 先生が 話されました。せんせいが はなされました。The teacher spoke. (respect)

Common mistakes

  • Mixing it up with the suffering passive: 先生に 〜れた (に + doer) is a passive; 先生が 〜れた (先生 as subject) is often respect.
  • Stacking two forms of respect: “お書きに なられる” (double respect) is often heard, but it's a mistake; choose お書きに なる or 書かれる.
  • Using it about yourself: “わたしは 八時に 来られました” doesn't work for showing respect to yourself.
