Turning a verb into a noun: 〜の・〜こと

Plain form + の/こと + particle

Plain form + の or こと turns an action into a noun so it can take a particle. の for what you perceive and in speech, こと before です and in set expressions.

In short

A verb can't carry a particle like が or を directly. To say “I like reading” or “speaking Japanese is hard”, you turn the action into a noun with の or こと: 本を 読むのが すきです, 日本語を 話す ことは 難しいです. の is more concrete and more spoken, こと more abstract.

  • 本を 読むのが すきです。ほんを よむのが すきです。I like reading.
  • 日本語を 話す ことは 難しいです。にほんごを はなす ことは むずかしいです。Speaking Japanese is hard.
  • 私の しゅみは 写真を とる ことです。わたしの しゅみは しゃしんを とる ことです。My hobby is taking photos.
  • 田中さんが 店に 入るのを 見ました。たなかさんが みせに はいるのを みました。I saw Mr Tanaka go into the shop.

The basics

In English, a verb can become a subject or an object just by adding -ing or “to”: “Reading is fun”, “I like to sing”. In Japanese, the particles が, を, は only attach to nouns. So you first turn the verb into a noun by adding の or こと.

The verb stays in the plain form, with all its complements: 本を 読む → 本を 読むの → 本を 読むのが すき.

  • 大阪で ラーメンを 食べるのが 楽しみです。おおさかで ラーメンを たべるのが たのしみです。I'm looking forward to eating ramen in Osaka.
  • 漢字を 覚えるのは 大変です。かんじを おぼえるのは たいへんです。Memorising kanji is hard.

How to form it

Take any plain form of the verb (present, negative, past) and add の or こと, then whatever particle the sentence needs: が (すき, じょうず, できる…), は (to make it the topic), を (with an action verb).

FormExampleMeaning
present読むのが すきto like reading
negative読まないのは よくないnot reading isn't good
past読んだのを わすれたI forgot I had read it
こと + ですしゅみは 読む ことですmy hobby is reading
  • かぎを かけたのを わすれました。かぎを かけたのを わすれました。I forgot that I had locked the door.
  • あまり 運動しないのは 体に よくないです。あまり うんどうしないのは からだに よくないです。Not getting enough exercise isn't good for your health.

の or こと?

Often both work (読むのが すき / 読む ことが すき). But some slots accept only one of them.

Only の: with verbs of perception and verbs describing a concrete scene, such as 見る, 聞く, 見える, 聞こえる, 待つ, 手伝う. You perceive an action as it happens.

Only こと: before です at the end of the sentence (しゅみは 〜ことです, 夢は 〜ことです), and in set expressions such as 〜ことが できる (to be able to) or 〜ことに する (to decide), which come later.

  • 犬が 走って いるのを 見ました。いぬが はしって いるのを みました。I saw a dog running.
  • 私の 夢は 日本で 働く ことです。わたしの ゆめは にほんで はたらく ことです。My dream is to work in Japan.

Not to be confused with possessive の

The の in 私の 本 links two nouns (“my book”). The の in 読むの comes after a verb and turns it into a noun. Just look at what comes before it: a noun means possession; a verb or an adjective means nominalisation.

  • これは 兄の かさです。これは あにの かさです。This is my big brother's umbrella. (possession)
  • 兄は およぐのが じょうずです。あには およぐのが じょうずです。My big brother is good at swimming. (nominalisation)

Common mistakes

  • Attaching the particle directly to the verb: “読むが すき” is wrong. It has to be 読むのが すき.
  • Saying “しゅみは 読むのです”: before です at the end of a sentence, it's こと (しゅみは 読む ことです).
  • Using こと with 見る or 聞く: “歌う ことを 聞いた” doesn't work; say 歌うのを 聞いた.
  • Putting です or ます before の/こと: “読みますのが” is wrong, the verb stays in the plain form.
