Reporting what someone said: 〜と言う

「quote」と 言う/plain form + と 言う

Words + と 言う: 「」 to quote word for word, plain form to rephrase (noun/な-adj + だ). 言って いました passes on information that still holds. Same pattern with 聞く and 書く.

In short

To report what someone said, put the words before と, then the verb 言う. Inside Japanese quotation brackets 「」, you quote word for word (田中さんは 「あした 来ます」と 言いました). Without brackets, you rephrase in the plain form (田中さんは あした 来ると 言いました). と is the Japanese quotation mark.

  • 田中さんは 「あした 来ます」と 言いました。たなかさんは 「あした きます」と いいました。Mr Tanaka said, “I'll come tomorrow.”
  • 田中さんは あした 来ると 言いました。たなかさんは あした くると いいました。Mr Tanaka said he would come tomorrow.
  • 先生は 試験は 難しくないと 言って いました。せんせいは しけんは むずかしくないと いって いました。The teacher said the exam wouldn't be difficult.
  • お母さんに よろしくと 言って ください。おかあさんに よろしくと いって ください。Please say hello to your mother for me.

The basics

Everything that was said goes before と, and 言う comes last: “[I'll come tomorrow] と he said”. It's the same と as in 〜と 思う: it marks the content of words or thoughts.

The person being spoken to takes に: 田中さんは 私に 〜と 言いました (Mr Tanaka told me that…).

The sentence, piece by piece
田中さんはMr Tanaka (topic)
あしたtomorrow
来るcome (plain form)
とquote: “…”
言いましたsaid

Mr Tanaka said he would come tomorrow.

  • verb
  • particle
  • 店の 人は もう 売り切れだと 言いました。みせの ひとは もう うりきれだと いいました。The shop assistant said it was already sold out.
  • 妹は 私に 「ありがとう」と 言いました。いもうとは わたしに 「ありがとう」と いいました。My little sister said “thank you” to me.

Direct or indirect speech

Direct speech: you copy the words exactly inside 「」, with their original politeness (です, ます…). Indirect speech: no brackets, and you switch to the plain form, with だ after a noun or a な-adjective.

Note that Japanese doesn't shift tenses the way English does (“he will come” → “he said he would come”): you keep the tense of the original words. あした 来ると 言った means “he said he would come tomorrow”.

WordsDirectIndirect
あした 来ます「あした 来ます」と 言ったあした 来ると 言った
いそがしいです「いそがしいです」と 言ったいそがしいと 言った
学生です「学生です」と 言った学生だと 言った
行きません「行きません」と 言った行かないと 言った
  • 山田さんは 「すぐ 行きます」と 言いました。やまださんは 「すぐ いきます」と いいました。Mr Yamada said, “I'll be right there.”
  • 山田さんは すぐ 行くと 言いました。やまださんは すぐ いくと いいました。Mr Yamada said he'd be right there.

言いました or 言って いました?

言いました reports something said as a past fact. 言って いました (“was saying”) passes on information that still holds: it's the natural form for relaying a message.

  • 田中さんが あしたは 休むと 言って いましたよ。たなかさんが あしたは やすむと いって いましたよ。Mr Tanaka was saying he'll be off tomorrow, you know.
  • 天気よほうで 雪が 降ると 言って いました。てんきよほうで ゆきが ふると いって いました。The weather forecast said it would snow.

Other verbs with と

The same construction works with other verbs of speech: 〜と 聞く (to hear that…), 〜と 書く (to write that…). 〜と 書いて ある (“it says…”, “it's written that…”) describes writing that's already there: 〜てある comes later.

Two phrases worth knowing: 〜に よろしくと 言って ください (say hello to… for me) and 日本語で 何と 言いますか (how do you say it in Japanese?).

  • あの 店は 安いと 聞きました。あの みせは やすいと ききました。I heard that shop is cheap.
  • かんばんに 「本日 休み」と 書いて あります。かんばんに 「ほんじつ やすみ」と かいて あります。The sign says “Closed today”.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up と and を: と marks the content of what's said (〜と 言う), を marks a word or thing said (うそを 言う: to tell a lie, 名前を 言う: to say your name).
  • Keeping です or ます without brackets: in indirect speech, switch to the plain form (来ると 言った, not “来ますと 言った”).
  • Forgetting だ after a noun in indirect speech: 学生だと 言った.
  • Using English quotation marks “ ” in a Japanese sentence: write 「」.
