Suggesting among friends: the volitional form
The volitional form (行こう, 食べよう, しよう, こよう) is the friends' version of 〜ましょう: to invite, to suggest with か, to spur yourself on. With a superior, stick to 〜ましょう.
In short
The volitional form is the plain version of 〜ましょう: 行こう! (let's go!), 食べようか (shall we eat?). Among friends or family, it's used to suggest, to invite, or to spur yourself on (がんばろう!). With a superior or a stranger, stick to 〜ましょう.
I'm hungry. Let's eat something.
It's raining, so shall we take a taxi home?
The exam's tomorrow. Let's do this!
Let's go to Dōtonbori this weekend!
The basics
You already know 行きましょう (let's go) and 行きましょうか (shall we go?). The volitional form says exactly the same thing in plain style: It's the form you hear among friends, in the family, between close colleagues.
Let's eat takoyaki together!

It's late, let's go home.
What time shall we meet tomorrow?
How to form it
Group 1: the final -u syllable changes to -o, lengthened with う (書く → 書こう).
Let's wait here.
Let's speak Japanese.
Three uses
Inviting: 行こう! (let's go!), often with よ for gentle insistence (行こうよ). Suggesting while leaving the choice open: 行こうか (shall we go?), or offering help: 手を 貸そうか (want me to give you a hand?). Encouraging yourself, talking to yourself:
Want me to carry your bags?
Right, from today I'm going to run every day.
The meaning is the same; only the register changes. With a teacher, a customer or a superior, say 〜ましょう / 〜ましょうか. The volitional form, addressed to them, would sound too casual.
| Register | Invitation | Suggestion |
|---|---|---|
Shall we get started, Professor?
Common mistakes
- Conjugating 来る wrongly: it's こよう, not “くよう” or “きよう”.
- Mixing up 行こう (let's go, it's decided) and 行こうか (shall we go? you're asking the other person's opinion).
- Using the volitional form with a superior: stick to 〜ましょう.
- Dropping the long vowel: 行こ without う is a very casual shortcut; the correct form is 行こう.
