For, in order to: 〜ために

Dictionary form / noun + の + ために

Dictionary form / noun + の + ために: “for, in order to” (deliberate action, same subject). With a person: “for the sake of”. In writing: “due to”.

In short

〜ために expresses a deliberate purpose: “for, in order to”. It comes after the dictionary form of an action verb, or after a noun + の. With a person, it means “for the sake of”; in writing, ために can also give a cause.

  • 家を 買う ために、お金を ためて います。いえを かう ために、おかねを ためて います。I'm saving up to buy a house.
  • 日本の 大学に 入る ために、日本語を 勉強して います。にほんの だいがくに はいる ために、にほんごを べんきょうして います。I'm studying Japanese to get into a Japanese university.
  • 家族の ために、毎日 働いて います。かぞくの ために、まいにち はたらいて います。I work every day for my family.
  • じこの ために、電車が 遅れました。じこの ために、でんしゃが おくれました。The train was delayed due to an accident.

The basics

ため is a noun meaning “purpose, good, benefit”. 〜ために is therefore “for the purpose of”: the first part says what you want to achieve, the second what you do to get there.

The purpose must be a deliberate action, decided by the same person who acts in the second part: “(I) save up so that (I) can buy”.

How to form it

Dictionary-form verb + ために. Noun + の + ために. No た-form, no potential: the purpose is an action you're going to do, and that you decide.

TypeFormExample
verb (intended action)dictionary + ためにやせる ために 走る
noun (purpose)N の ために試験の ために 勉強する
person (beneficiary)人の ために子どもの ために 料理を 作る
before a noun〜ための + N外国人の ための 本
  • 試験の ために、毎晩 勉強して います。しけんの ために、まいばん べんきょうして います。I study every evening for the exam.
  • これは 外国人の ための 日本語の 本です。これは がいこくじんの ための にほんごの ほんです。This is a Japanese book for foreigners.

For someone's sake

After a person or a group, ために means “for the sake of, for the benefit of”. English simply says “for”.

  • 母は 家族の ために、毎朝 おべんとうを 作って くれます。ははは かぞくの ために、まいあさ おべんとうを つくって くれます。Every morning, my mother makes bentō for the family.
  • 体の ために、肉より 魚を 食べる ように して います。からだの ために、にくより さかなを たべる ように して います。For my health, I try to eat fish rather than meat.

A cause, in writing

In announcements and written texts, ために can also explain a cause: “due to, owing to”. The second part is then a fact, often in the past, not a deliberate action.

If the purpose is an ability or a state you don't control (being able to speak, not forgetting), you don't use ために but 〜ように: that's the next point.

  • 台風の ために、試合は 中止に なりました。たいふうの ために、しあいは ちゅうしに なりました。The match was cancelled due to the typhoon.

Common mistakes

  • Putting a potential or a non-deliberate verb before ために (“話せる ために”): in that case, it's ように.
  • Forgetting の after a noun: 家族の ために, not “家族 ために”.
  • Mixing up purpose and cause: 台風の ために 中止 (cause) isn't a purpose; check whether what follows is a deliberate action or something that happened.
