Wanting someone to do something: 〜てほしい

A に 〜て ほしい(negative: 〜ないで ほしい)

Person + に + verb in て + ほしい: “I want someone to…”; 〜ないで ほしい: “…not to”. For yourself: 〜たい; for an object: N が ほしい.

In short

A に 〜て ほしい: to want someone else to do something. The person you expect to act takes に. In the negative, 〜ないで ほしい: “I'd like you not to…”. For yourself, keep 〜たい.

  • 母に 早く 元気に なって ほしい。ははに はやく げんきに なって ほしい。I want my mother to get better soon.
  • 田中さんに パーティーに 来て ほしいです。たなかさんに パーティーに きて ほしいです。I'd like Mr Tanaka to come to the party.
  • この ことは だれにも 言わないで ほしい。この ことは だれにも いわないで ほしい。I'd rather you didn't tell anyone about this.
  • 雨が 早く やんで ほしいな。あめが はやく やんで ほしいな。I really wish the rain would stop soon.

The basics

You know ほしい (“to want an object”) and 〜たい (“to want to do”). One case is missing: wanting someone else to do something. That's 〜て ほしい: you “want” another person's action — English “I want you to…”.

The person you'd like to see act takes に: the action is expected from them.

The sentence, piece by piece
母にfrom my mother
早くsoon
元気に なってget better (て-form)
ほしいI want (her to)

I want my mother to get better soon.

  • noun
  • adjective
  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • 子どもたちに やさいを もっと 食べて ほしい。こどもたちに やさいを もっと たべて ほしい。I'd like the children to eat more vegetables.

Three ways of wanting

Choose according to what you want: an object, an action for yourself, or an action by someone else.

I want…FormExample
an objectN が ほしいカメラが ほしい
to do it myselfstem + たい日本へ 行きたい
someone to do it人に 〜て ほしい友だちに 来て ほしい
someone not to do it人に 〜ないで ほしい友だちに 行かないで ほしい
  • わたしは 新しい 自転車が ほしい。わたしは あたらしい じてんしゃが ほしい。I want a new bike.
  • 兄に 自転車を 直して ほしい。あにに じてんしゃを なおして ほしい。I'd like my big brother to fix my bike.

With things and nature

When what you're wishing for isn't a person but a thing or a phenomenon (the rain, spring), use が instead of に.

  • 早く 春が 来て ほしい。はやく はるが きて ほしい。I wish spring would hurry up and come.
  • あしたの 運動会は 雨が 降らないで ほしい。あしたの うんどうかいは あめが ふらないで ほしい。I hope it doesn't rain for tomorrow's sports day.

Careful with superiors

〜て ほしい expresses a wish, not a polite request. Said directly to a superior (“先生に 来て ほしいです”), it sounds like a demand. To ask, use 〜て いただけませんか; to express this wish politely, 〜て いただきたいんですが.

  • 先生にも パーティーに 来て いただきたいんですが…せんせいにも パーティーに きて いただきたいんですが…I'd be delighted if you could come to the party too, Professor…

Common mistakes

  • Using を: you say パソコンが ほしい, and 友だちに 来て ほしい.
  • Using が for the person you'd like to see act: it's に (友だちに 来て ほしい).
  • Using it to ask a superior politely: it's a wish, not a request; say 〜て いただけませんか.
