Favours received respectfully: 〜ていただく・〜てくださる
Verb in て + いただく / くださる
With a superior: 〜て もらう → 〜て いただく (B に), 〜て くれる → 〜て くださる (B が). Same meaning, more respect and gratitude.
In short
〜て いただく and 〜て くださる are the respectful versions of 〜て もらう and 〜て くれる. They're used when the favour comes from a superior: teacher, customer, boss. いただく keeps the structure of もらう (B に), くださる that of くれる (B が).
- 先生に 説明して いただきました。せんせいに せつめいして いただきました。The teacher kindly explained it to me.
- 社長が 駅まで 来て くださいました。しゃちょうが えきまで きて くださいました。The company president kindly came all the way to the station for us.
- 田中先生に 作文を 見て いただきました。たなかせんせいに さくぶんを みて いただきました。My teacher, Mr Tanaka, was kind enough to look over my essay.
- 先生が 道を 教えて くださいました。せんせいが みちを おしえて くださいました。The teacher kindly showed me the way.
The basics
You've seen 〜て もらう and 〜て くれる for favours. When the person doing the favour is a superior, you go up a notch: もらう becomes いただく, くれる becomes くださる. The meaning stays the same, but you show your respect and gratitude — rather like English “kindly” or “was kind enough to”.
The teacher kindly explained it to me.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 友だちに 説明して もらいました。ともだちに せつめいして もらいました。A friend explained it to me. (between equals)
- 先生に 説明して いただきました。せんせいに せつめいして いただきました。The teacher explained it to me. (respectful)
How to form it
Both forms follow exactly the structure of their simple version. With いただく, I'm the subject and the superior takes に. With くださる, the superior is the subject (が).
| Simple | Respectful | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 〜て もらう | 〜て いただく | わたしは B に | 先生に 見て いただいた |
| 〜て くれる | 〜て くださる | B が (わたしに) | 先生が 見て くださった |
- お客さまに アンケートに 答えて いただきました。おきゃくさまに アンケートに こたえて いただきました。Some customers were kind enough to fill in the questionnaire.
- 部長が 会社の 中を あんないして くださいました。ぶちょうが かいしゃの なかを あんないして くださいました。The department manager kindly showed me around the company.
For asking: 〜て いただけますか
These forms are also used to ask for a favour politely: 〜て くださいませんか, 〜て いただけますか, 〜て いただけませんか. They're covered in detail in the next point.
- もう 一度 説明して いただけますか。もう いちど せつめいして いただけますか。Could you explain it once more, please?
Don't mix the viewpoints
The typical mistake is keeping が with いただく: “先生が 教えて いただいた” doesn't work, because いただく describes what I receive. Choose: either 先生に 〜て いただいた (the receiver's viewpoint) or 先生が 〜て くださった (the viewpoint of the teacher who gives).
And of course, these forms are never used for your own actions: they always honour the other person.
- 先生が 手紙を 読んで くださいました。せんせいが てがみを よんで くださいました。The teacher was kind enough to read my letter.
Common mistakes
- Mixing the viewpoints: “先生が 〜て いただいた” is wrong; it's 先生に 〜て いただいた or 先生が 〜て くださった.
- Forgetting に before いただく: the person doing the favour is marked with に.
- Using いただく or くださる about yourself: they always honour the person doing the favour.
