About: 〜について・〜に関して
Noun + について / について の + Noun / に関して / に関する + Noun
Noun + について / に関して: about, on. Before a noun: についての + noun, or に関する + noun (written). に関して is the formal version.
In short
〜について marks the topic you're talking about, researching, thinking about or asking about: “about, on, concerning”. 〜に関して has the same meaning, more formally. Before a noun, you say 〜についての + noun or, in writing, 〜に関する + noun.
- 京都の歴史について調べています。きょうとのれきしについてしらべています。I'm researching the history of Kyoto.
- この問題について、どう思いますか。このもんだいについて、どうおもいますか。What do you think about this problem?
- 日本の文化についての本を読んだ。にほんのぶんかについてのほんをよんだ。I read a book on Japanese culture.
- 新しい計画に関して、質問はありますか。あたらしいけいかくにかんして、しつもんはありますか。Do you have any questions regarding the new project?
The basics
について comes after a noun to say what you're talking about: it's the “on” of “a book on Kyoto”, the “about” of “talk about something”, the “concerning” of questions.
It's mostly found with verbs of speaking, thinking and researching: 話す (to talk), 聞く (to ask), 調べる (to look into), 考える (to think about), 書く (to write), 説明する (to explain), 知っている (to know).
I'm researching the history of Kyoto.
- noun
- particle
- verb
- 先生に、作文について聞いてみた。せんせいに、さくぶんについてきいてみた。I asked the teacher about my essay.
- 将来について、よく考えたほうがいい。しょうらいについて、よくかんがえたほうがいい。You'd better think seriously about your future.
How to form it
Before a verb, use について or に関して. Before a noun, add の (についての) or switch to the る-form (に関する). With は or も, you highlight or add a topic.
| Form | Position | Register | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| について | before a verb | everyday | 日本について話す |
| についての + noun | before a noun | everyday | 日本についての本 |
| に関して | before a verb | formal | この件に関して説明する |
| に関する + noun | before a noun | written, formal | 安全に関するルール |
| については / についても | topic, addition | everyday | お金については、あとで話そう |
- お金については、あとで話しましょう。おかねについては、あとではなしましょう。As for the money, let's talk about it later.
- 安全に関するルールを守ってください。あんぜんにかんするるーるをまもってください。Please follow the safety rules.
について or に関して?
The meaning is the same. に関して is more formal: you find it in announcements, business emails, newspapers and reports. In a conversation between friends, に関して sounds stiff; について works everywhere.
- この件に関して、ご意見をお聞かせください。このけんにかんして、ごいけんをおきかせください。We would welcome your views on this matter.
- きのう見た映画について話そうよ。きのうみたえいがについてはなそうよ。Let's talk about the film we saw yesterday!
について, にとって, に対して
These three expressions look alike but aren't interchangeable. について = the topic dealt with (“talk about”). にとって = the point of view of someone judging (“for me, it's important”). に対して = the target of an attitude (“polite towards”).
And when you simply like or study something, keep the ordinary particles: 日本が好きだ, 日本語を勉強する. について only adds the idea of “dealing with a topic”.
| Expression | Idea | Example |
|---|---|---|
| について | topic dealt with | 日本について話す |
| にとって | point of view | 私にとって大切だ |
| に対して | target of an attitude | 親に対して失礼だ |
Common mistakes
- Replacing は, が or を with について when you're simply talking about a thing: “日本についてが好き” is wrong; say 日本が好きだ.
- Attaching について directly to a noun: “日本について本” is wrong. You need 日本についての本 or 日本に関する本.
- Using に関して in a relaxed conversation: it's correct but stiff; について sounds more natural.
- Mixing up について (topic) and にとって (point of view): they sound alike but mean very different things.
