Version française

Starting with: 〜をはじめ

Noun + をはじめ(として)、〜 / をはじめとする + Noun

Noun + をはじめ(として)、+ group: starting with, not least. Before a noun: をはじめとする. Careful register: speeches, thank-yous, guides.

In short

〜をはじめ cites the most representative example of a group, then talks about the whole group: “starting with, including, not least”. So the rest of the sentence refers to a group (多くの, みんな, いろいろな). Polite or written register: speeches, thank-yous, tourist guides.

  • 京都には、金閣寺をはじめ、有名なお寺がたくさんある。きょうとには、きんかくじをはじめ、ゆうめいなおてらがたくさんある。Kyoto has many famous temples, the Kinkaku-ji among them.
  • 社長をはじめ、社員全員がパーティーに参加した。しゃちょうをはじめ、しゃいんぜんいんがぱーてぃーにさんかした。All the employees, starting with the company president, took part in the party.
  • 日本には、すしをはじめとする有名な料理が多い。にほんには、すしをはじめとするゆうめいなりょうりがおおい。Japan has many famous dishes, sushi first among them.
  • 校長先生をはじめ、多くの先生方にお世話になりました。こうちょうせんせいをはじめ、おおくのせんせいがたにおせわになりました。I'm grateful to many teachers, starting with the head teacher, for all they've done for me.

The basics

をはじめ comes from the verb はじめる (“to start”): you “start with” the best-known or most important member of a group, then talk about the whole group.

So the second half of the sentence always refers to a group: 多くの, たくさん, いろいろな, みんな, 全員. If the sentence is about only one thing, をはじめ makes no sense.

  • この町には、お茶をはじめ、おいしい物がいろいろある。このまちには、おちゃをはじめ、おいしいものがいろいろある。This town has all sorts of delicious things, its tea first among them.
  • 京都は、春の桜をはじめ、秋の紅葉、冬の雪景色と、一年中美しい。きょうとは、はるのさくらをはじめ、あきのこうよう、ふゆのゆきげしきと、いちねんじゅううつくしい。Kyoto is beautiful all year round: cherry blossom in spring, of course, but also the autumn leaves and the snowy winter scenery.

How to form it

Place をはじめ after the noun, followed by a comma. をはじめとして is a little more formal. Before a noun, use をはじめとする.

FormPositionExample
をはじめ、start of sentence社長をはじめ、全員が来た
をはじめとして、start of sentence (more formal)東京をはじめとして、大きな町で
をはじめとする + nounbefore a nounすしをはじめとする料理
  • 京都をはじめとして、関西の町では、この言葉をよく使う。きょうとをはじめとして、かんさいのまちでは、このことばをよくつかう。In the cities of Kansai, starting with Kyoto, this word is often used.
  • 日本語をはじめとするアジアの言葉を研究している。にほんごをはじめとするあじあのことばをけんきゅうしている。I study Asian languages, starting with Japanese.

をはじめ, など, を中心に

など (“among others, etc.”) goes at the end of a list and stays neutral: すしやてんぷらなど. をはじめ, by contrast, highlights the first item cited: the most representative, the emblem of the group.

を中心に (previous point) refers to a core around which something spreads, with no idea of a list or a star example.

ExpressionPositionNuance
すしをはじめ、いろいろな料理at the frontstar example, careful tone
すしやてんぷらなどの料理at the end of the listsimple list
若者を中心に人気があるcoreespecially among…

A speech-making tone

をはじめ is very common in speeches and official thanks: you name the most important person first, then everyone. In a conversation between friends, you'd rather say 〜とか、〜も.

  • 部長をはじめ、みなさまに心からお礼を申し上げます。ぶちょうをはじめ、みなさまにこころからおれいをもうしあげます。I would like to thank each and every one of you most sincerely, starting with our director.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up をはじめ and 〜をはじめる (“to start something”): 勉強をはじめた = I started studying. The comma and a following group signal をはじめ “starting with”.
  • Using it for a single thing: “金閣寺をはじめ、きれいだ” doesn't work; what follows must refer to a group (多くのお寺, みんな).
  • Adding て: “をはじめて” is wrong in this sense; the form is をはじめ or をはじめとして.
