Making sure to: 〜ようにする

Verb (dictionary / ない) + ようにする / ようにしている

Verb (dictionary or ない) + ようにする: make sure to, try to. 〜ようにしている = a habit you impose on yourself; 〜ようにしてください = a polite instruction.

In short

〜ようにする expresses a conscious effort to make something happen (or not happen): “to make sure to, to try to”. In the continuous form, 〜ようにしている describes a habit you impose on yourself; 〜ようにしてください is a polite instruction.

  • 毎日一万歩歩くようにしています。まいにちいちまんぽあるくようにしています。I try to walk ten thousand steps every day.
  • 夜はコーヒーを飲まないようにしている。よるはこーひーをのまないようにしている。I avoid drinking coffee in the evening.
  • 明日から、もっと早く起きるようにします。あしたから、もっとはやくおきるようにします。From tomorrow, I'll make sure to get up earlier.
  • 時間に遅れないようにしてください。じかんにおくれないようにしてください。Please make sure you're not late.

The basics

In the previous point, ようになる told of a change that happens. With ようにする, you're the one acting: you make an effort so that something happens or doesn't happen. It's “I make sure to”, “I make a point of”, “I try to get into the habit of”.

The result isn't guaranteed: ようにする states the intention and the effort, not the success. That's what makes it so common in New Year's resolutions.

The sentence, piece by piece
夜はin the evening (topic)
コーヒーをcoffee (object)
飲まないnot drink
ようにso as to
しているI do (habitually)

I avoid drinking coffee in the evening.

  • これからは、ごみを分けて出すようにします。これからは、ごみをわけてだすようにします。From now on, I'll make sure to sort my rubbish.

How to form it

Attach ようにする to the dictionary form or the ない-form of the verb, then conjugate する according to what you mean: a resolution, a habit, an instruction.

FormMeaningExample
〜ようにするresolution: I'll make sure to早く寝るようにする
〜ようにしているhabit you impose on yourself毎日歩くようにしている
〜ないようにするavoid, make sure not toお酒を飲まないようにする
〜ようにしてくださいpolite instruction: please make sure遅れないようにしてください
〜ようにしましょうadvice: let's make a habit of水をよく飲むようにしましょう
  • 風邪をひいたので、今日は早く寝るようにします。かぜをひいたので、きょうははやくねるようにします。I've caught a cold, so I'll make sure to go to bed early tonight.
  • お寺の中では、大きい声で話さないようにしてください。おてらのなかでは、おおきいこえではなさないようにしてください。Inside the temple, please make sure not to talk loudly.

ようにする, ことにする, ようになる

Three neighbouring constructions, three different ideas. ことにする (N4) announces a clear decision, made at a specific moment. ようにする describes an ongoing effort, with no guarantee. ようになる tells the outcome: the change has happened.

So: 毎日歩くことにした = “I've decided to walk every day”; 毎日歩くようにしている = “I make a point of walking every day”; 毎日歩くようになった = “I've started walking every day”.

FormIdeaTranslation
歩くことにしたdecisionI've decided to walk
歩くようにしているeffort, chosen habitI make a point of walking
歩くようになったobserved changeI've started walking
  • 来年、日本に留学することにしました。らいねん、にほんにりゅうがくすることにしました。I've decided to go and study in Japan next year.
  • 毎晩、日本語のニュースを聞くようにしています。まいばん、にほんごのにゅーすをきくようにしています。I make a point of listening to the news in Japanese every evening.

“Trying”: three ways to say it

English “try” translates in several ways. 〜てみる (N4): try something to see what it's like (食べてみる, “to taste”). 〜ようとする (volitional + とする): attempt to do something, often without succeeding, or be about to do it (出かけようとしたら、雨が降ってきた). 〜ようにする: try to get into a habit or to be careful.

If you try a dish once, it's 食べてみる. If you try to eat more healthily day to day, it's ようにする.

  • 八ツ橋を食べてみました。おいしかったです。やつはしをたべてみました。おいしかったです。I tried some yatsuhashi. They were good.
  • ドアを開けようとしたが、開かなかった。どあをあけようとしたが、あかなかった。I tried to open the door, but it wouldn't open.

Common mistakes

  • Translating every “try” with ようにする: to taste or test something once, it's 〜てみる; for a one-off attempt, it's 〜ようとする.
  • Mixing up ようにする (I make an effort) and ようになる (it has become the case): 早く起きるようにした ≠ 早く起きるようになった.
  • Mixing it up with ことにする: ことにした announces a firm decision; ようにしている only says you're doing your best.
  • Putting the verb in the て-form or the past before ように: say 遅れないようにする, not “遅れなくてようにする”.
