Version française

Centred on: 〜を中心に

Noun + を中心に(して)/ を中心とした + Noun

Noun + を中心に: centred on, mainly, especially (area, audience, theme). Before a noun: を中心とした / を中心にした. Rather written register.

In short

〜を中心に indicates the centre, the core of something that spreads around it: a geographical area (関西を中心に雨が降る), an audience (若者を中心に人気がある) or a theme (計画を中心に話し合う). It's rather written in register, very common in weather forecasts and the news.

  • 明日は、関西を中心に雨が降るでしょう。あしたは、かんさいをちゅうしんにあめがふるでしょう。Tomorrow, there will be rain, mainly in the Kansai region.
  • この店は、若者を中心に人気がある。このみせは、わかものをちゅうしんににんきがある。This shop is popular, especially with young people.
  • 京都を中心とした旅行を計画している。きょうとをちゅうしんとしたりょこうをけいかくしている。I'm planning a trip centred on Kyoto.
  • 会議では、来年の計画を中心に話し合った。かいぎでは、らいねんのけいかくをちゅうしんにはなしあった。At the meeting, we mainly discussed next year's plan.

The basics

〜を中心に means “taking … as the centre”. It's used when something spreads out around a main point: rain around a region, popularity around an audience, a discussion around a theme. English says “mainly, especially, centred on, focusing on”.

The centre isn't the only thing concerned: the surroundings are too, but less so. That's what sets it apart from “only”.

The sentence, piece by piece
明日は、tomorrow (topic)
関西をKansai (object of “taking as”)
中心にas the centre
雨がrain (subject)
降るでしょうwill probably fall

Tomorrow, there will be rain, mainly in the Kansai region.

  • noun
  • grammatical form
  • verb
  • このイベントは、学生を中心に三百人ぐらいが参加した。このいべんとは、がくせいをちゅうしんにさんびゃくにんぐらいがさんかした。About three hundred people, mostly students, took part in this event.
  • 地球は太陽を中心に回っている。ちきゅうはたいようをちゅうしんにまわっている。The Earth revolves around the Sun.

How to form it

The particle を is required: you “take” the noun as the centre. There are several variants, from most common to most written. Before a noun, use を中心とした or を中心にした.

FormPositionExample
を中心にbefore a verb関西を中心に雨が降る
を中心にしてbefore a verb (slightly more spoken)子どもを中心にして考える
を中心としてbefore a verb (written)東京を中心として広がる
を中心とした + nounbefore a noun (written)若者を中心としたイベント
を中心にした + nounbefore a noun野球を中心にした生活
  • うちでは、いつも子どもを中心にして予定を決める。うちでは、いつもこどもをちゅうしんにしてよていをきめる。At our house, we always plan our schedule around the children.
  • 大学時代は、野球を中心にした生活だった。だいがくじだいは、やきゅうをちゅうしんにしたせいかつだった。At university, my life revolved around baseball.

を中心に, の中心に, をはじめ

の中心に keeps the literal meaning: “in the centre of, in the middle of” a place (京都の中心に公園がある). を中心に says something radiates out around a core.

をはじめ (next point) cites the first, most representative example in a list: 金閣寺をはじめ、多くのお寺. を中心に refers to the main area or group, with no idea of a list.

ExpressionIdeaExample
京都の中心にin the centre of Kyoto (precise place)京都の中心に公園がある
京都を中心にmainly around Kyoto京都を中心に雪が降った
京都をはじめstarting with Kyoto (list)京都をはじめ、多くの町で
  • 町の中心に、古いお寺がある。まちのちゅうしんに、ふるいおてらがある。There's an old temple in the centre of town.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting を: “京都の中心に” means “in the centre of Kyoto” (a precise place), not “mainly around Kyoto”.
  • Translating it as “only”: を中心に says the core is most concerned, but the surroundings are too.
  • Using it in relaxed conversation: it sounds written or journalistic; in speech, people often say 主に (“mainly”).
