Telling someone to: 〜ように言う・頼む

Verb (dictionary / ない) + ように + 言う・頼む・注意する・伝える

Verb (dictionary / ない) + ように + 言う・頼む・注意する・伝える: reporting an order or request (“tell to, ask to”). In the passive: 〜ように言われた. Polite: 〜ようにお伝えください.

In short

To report an order, a request or advice without quoting the exact words, put the verb in the dictionary form (or the ない-form) + ように, then a verb of speech: 言う (to tell), 頼む (to ask), 注意する (to warn), 伝える (to pass on). Very often in the passive: 〜ように言われた, “I was told to…”.

  • 先生に、もっと早く寝るように言われた。せんせいに、もっとはやくねるようにいわれた。The teacher told me to go to bed earlier.
  • 母は弟に、部屋をきれいにするように言った。はははおとうとに、へやをきれいにするようにいった。My mother told my little brother to tidy his room.
  • 田中さんに、明日の会議に来るように伝えてください。たなかさんに、あしたのかいぎにくるようにつたえてください。Please tell Mr Tanaka to come to tomorrow's meeting.
  • お寺の人に、写真を撮らないように注意されました。おてらのひとに、しゃしんをとらないようにちゅういされました。Someone from the temple warned me not to take photos.

The basics

When you tell someone you were asked or ordered to do something, you can quote the exact words in 「」 with と (direct speech). But more often, you rephrase: that's indirect speech, “he told me to…”. In Japanese, it's built with ように.

The verb before ように is in the dictionary form (or the ない-form for “not to”), whatever the register of the original order.

The sentence, piece by piece
先生にby the teacher
早くearly
寝るgo to bed
ように(to): content of the order
言われたI was told (passive)

The teacher told me to go to bed early.

  • 部長に、資料をコピーするように頼まれました。ぶちょうに、しりょうをこぴーするようにたのまれました。My boss asked me to photocopy the documents.
  • 子どもたちに、道路で遊ばないように言いました。こどもたちに、どうろであそばないようにいいました。I told the children not to play in the road.

The verbs that follow ように

The final verb specifies the kind of speech. The person being spoken to takes に; in the passive, it's the person giving the order who takes に.

VerbMeaningExample
言うto tell to急ぐように言った
頼むto ask to手伝うように頼んだ
注意するto warn (not) to走らないように注意した
伝えるto pass on (a message) to電話するように伝えて
お願いするto request (polite)静かにするようにお願いした
言われる (passive)to be told to休むように言われた
  • 駅員に、白い線の内側に立つように注意された。えきいんに、しろいせんのうちがわにたつようにちゅういされた。A station attendant warned me to stand behind the white line.
  • 医者に、一週間ぐらい休むように言われました。いしゃに、いっしゅうかんぐらいやすむようにいわれました。The doctor told me to rest for about a week.

Direct or indirect speech?

In direct speech, you repeat the exact words: 「早く寝なさい」と言われた, 「手伝ってください」と頼んだ. In indirect speech, you remove the form of the order (なさい, てください, な) and keep the bare verb + ように.

The meaning is the same, but indirect speech is more neutral and more common in a story or a report at work.

Direct speechIndirect speech
「早く寝なさい」と言われた早く寝るように言われた
「手伝ってください」と頼んだ手伝うように頼んだ
「走るな」と注意された走らないように注意された
  • 父に「もっと勉強しなさい」と言われた。ちちに「もっとべんきょうしなさい」といわれた。My father told me, “Study harder!”
  • 父に、もっと勉強するように言われた。ちちに、もっとべんきょうするようにいわれた。My father told me to study harder.

Polite version: 〜ようにお伝えください

At work or on the phone, to pass a message to someone who isn't there, you say 〜ようにお伝えください (“could you tell him to…”). The verb before ように can itself be polite: お電話くださるように.

  • お手数ですが、山田さんに、お電話くださるようにお伝えください。おてすうですが、やまださんに、おでんわくださるようにおつたえください。Sorry to trouble you, but could you ask Mr Yamada to call me back?
  • お客様に、こちらでお待ちになるようにお願いしました。おきゃくさまに、こちらでおまちになるようにおねがいしました。I asked the customer to wait here.

Common mistakes

  • Keeping the form of the order before ように: “寝なさいように”, “手伝ってくださいように” don't exist. The verb is bare: 寝るように, 手伝うように.
  • Mixing it up with ように “so that”: if a verb of speech (言う, 頼む, 伝える) comes right after, ように gives the content of the order, not a purpose.
  • Getting the direction wrong in the passive: 先生に言われた = the teacher told me; 先生に言った = I told the teacher.
