As: 〜として

Noun + として / としての + Noun / としては / としても

Noun + として: as (role, status). としての + noun; としては = for a… / as for me; としても = also as.

In short

〜として indicates the role, status or capacity in which someone acts or something is considered: “as, in the capacity of”. としては adds “for a…” or “from my point of view”; としても means “also as”.

  • 留学生として京都に来ました。りゅうがくせいとしてきょうとにきました。I came to Kyoto as an international student.
  • 趣味として、お茶を習っています。しゅみとして、おちゃをならっています。I'm learning the tea ceremony as a hobby.
  • この建物は、昔は学校として使われていた。このたてものは、むかしはがっこうとしてつかわれていた。This building used to be used as a school.
  • 私としては、この計画に賛成です。わたしとしては、このけいかくにさんせいです。For my part, I'm in favour of this plan.

The basics

として comes after a noun to say in what capacity someone acts or under what label something is filed: as a student, as a gift, on a trial basis, as a hobby.

It's the “as” of “work as a guide” or “as a parent”. The sentence says what someone does in that role.

来ましたI came

  • noun
  • particle
  • verb
  • 夏休みに、ガイドとして働いた。なつやすみに、がいどとしてはたらいた。During the summer holidays, I worked as a guide.
  • おみやげとして、八ツ橋を買った。おみやげとして、やつはしをかった。I bought some yatsuhashi as a souvenir.

How to form it

として follows a noun directly. Before another noun, add の. With は, you give a point of view or a comparison; with も, you add a second role.

FormMeaningExample
としてas先生として働く
としての + nounas a… (before a noun)親としての責任
としてはfor a… / as for me私としては反対だ
としてもalso as歌手としても有名だ
  • 社会人としての生活に、少しずつ慣れてきた。しゃかいじんとしてのせいかつに、すこしずつなれてきた。I'm gradually getting used to life as a working adult.
  • 彼は作家としても有名だ。かれはさっかとしてもゆうめいだ。He's also famous as a writer.

としては: “for a…” and “as for me”

After a category, としては means “for a…”: you compare with what's expected of the category (日本人としては背が高い, “he's tall for a Japanese person”).

After 私 or the name of an organisation, 私としては introduces a cautious opinion: “for my part, as far as I'm concerned”. It's very common at work for giving your view without imposing it.

  • 彼は、日本人としては背が高いほうだ。かれは、にほんじんとしてはせがたかいほうだ。For a Japanese person, he's on the tall side.
  • 会社としては、この問題を早く解決したい。かいしゃとしては、このもんだいをはやくかいけつしたい。As a company, we want to resolve this problem quickly.

として or にとって?

として = the role you play, the hat you're wearing when you act. にとって = the point of view of someone judging. 親として子どもを守る (I protect my child as a parent); 子どもにとって親は大切だ (to a child, its parents are important).

Also watch out for neighbouring forms: 〜とする (“to regard as, to decide”) and 〜としたら (“supposing that”, covered later) have nothing to do with roles.

PhraseMeaning
先生として話すto speak as a teacher (their role)
先生にとって大切だit's important to the teacher (their view)
先生について話すto talk about the teacher (the topic)

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up として and にとって: “私として、家族が大切です” is wrong; it's 私にとって (point of view). として expresses a role.
  • Forgetting の before a noun: “親として責任” is wrong; say 親としての責任.
  • Seeing として wherever there's と + する: 〜とする (“to consider that”) and 〜としたら (“supposing that”) are different constructions.
