So that: 〜ように
Verb (dictionary / ない / potential) + ように、〜
Non-deliberate verb, potential or negative + ように、〜: “so that, so as (not) to”. For a deliberate purpose with the same subject, say 〜ために. On its own at the end, 〜ますように is a wish.
In short
〜ように、〜 gives the purpose of an action when that purpose is a state or result you don't directly control: “so that, in order that”. It's used with a non-deliberate verb (わかる, 見える, 聞こえる), a potential, a negative, or when the purpose concerns another person. For a deliberate purpose with the same subject, keep 〜ために (N4).
- 忘れないように、メモしておきます。わすれないように、めもしておきます。I'll make a note of it so I don't forget.
- 後ろの人にも聞こえるように、大きい声で話してください。うしろのひとにもきこえるように、おおきいこえではなしてください。Please speak up so that the people at the back can hear too.
- 子どもでもわかるように、やさしい言葉で説明しました。こどもでもわかるように、やさしいことばでせつめいしました。I explained it in simple words so that even a child could understand.
- 日本語が上手に話せるように、毎日練習しています。にほんごがじょうずにはなせるように、まいにちれんしゅうしています。I practise every day so that I can speak Japanese well.
The basics
〜ように placed mid-sentence and followed by a comma gives a purpose: “so that, in order to, so as not to”. But not just any purpose: it's a result you hope to achieve, a state that doesn't depend entirely on your will.
You don't decide to hear, to understand or not to forget: you do something (speak loudly, explain simply, take notes) so that this result happens.
I'll make a note of it so I don't forget.

- 道に迷わないように、地図をダウンロードしておいた。みちにまよわないように、ちずをだうんろーどしておいた。I downloaded a map so I wouldn't get lost.
- 外国人にもわかるように、駅の案内は英語でも書いてある。がいこくじんにもわかるように、えきのあんないはえいごでもかいてある。So that foreigners can understand too, the station signs are also in English.
What comes before ように
The verb before ように expresses a state or a result: a verb for something that just happens, a potential, a negative, or the action of someone other than the subject of the sentence.
| Before ように | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| non-deliberate verb | よく見えるように | so as to see well |
| potential | 話せるように | so as to be able to speak |
| negative | 忘れないように | so as not to forget |
| different subject | 子どもが読めるように | so that the children can read |
- 学生が質問しやすいように、先生は授業のあとも教室に残っている。がくせいがしつもんしやすいように、せんせいはじゅぎょうのあともきょうしつにのこっている。So that the students can ask questions easily, the teacher stays in the classroom after the lesson.
- 落とさないように、財布をかばんの中に入れた。おとさないように、さいふをかばんのなかにいれた。I put my wallet in my bag so I wouldn't lose it.
ように or ために?
That's the key question. 〜ために (N4) is used with a deliberate verb, when the subject of the purpose and of the action are the same: I do A in order to do B myself, and B depends on my will.
〜ように is used when the purpose is a state, an ability, a negative, or depends on someone else. The best test: a potential before the purpose always calls for ように.
| ために (deliberate purpose) | ように (hoped-for result) |
|---|---|
| 上手になるために、練習する | 上手になれるように、練習する |
| 家を買うために、お金を貯める | 家が買えるように、お金を貯める |
| 試験に合格するために、勉強する | 試験に合格できるように、勉強する |
| × 見えるために | よく見えるように、前に座る |
- 日本の大学に入るために、日本語を勉強しています。にほんのだいがくにはいるために、にほんごをべんきょうしています。I'm studying Japanese to get into a Japanese university.
- よく見えるように、前の席に座りました。よくみえるように、まえのせきにすわりました。I sat at the front so I could see well.
A wish: 〜ますように
Used on its own at the end of a sentence, 〜ますように expresses a wish, a prayer. It's what visitors write on the wooden plaques (絵馬) at Kyoto's shrines: the full sentence would be “I pray that…”, but it's left hanging.
- 試験に合格できますように。しけんにごうかくできますように。May I pass the exam.
- 家族がみんな元気でいられますように。かぞくがみんなげんきでいられますように。May my whole family stay healthy.
Common mistakes
- Saying 「上手になれるために」: a potential doesn't take ために. Say 上手になれるように, or 上手になるために.
- Using ように with a deliberate verb and the same subject: for “I'm saving up to study abroad”, it's 留学するために.
- Mixing it up with ように meaning “like” (N4, 〜のように): 先生のように話す = speak like the teacher; 先生にわかるように話す = speak so the teacher understands.
