Depending on, by, because of: 〜によって・〜による
Noun + によって / による + Noun / によっては / によると
Noun + によって: by (agent of a written passive), by means of, because of, depending on. Before a noun: による. によっては = in some cases; によると = according to.
In short
〜によって links a fact to what it depends on. Four uses: the agent of a written passive (“by”), the means (“by means of”), the cause (“because of, due to”) and variation (“depending on”). Before a noun, say 〜による. 〜によっては = “in some cases”; 〜によると (N4) = “according to” a source.
- この庭は、有名な庭師によって作られた。このにわは、ゆうめいなにわしによってつくられた。This garden was created by a famous gardener.
- 大雪によって、電車が止まった。おおゆきによって、でんしゃがとまった。The trains stopped because of heavy snow.
- 考え方は人によって違う。かんがえかたはひとによってちがう。Ways of thinking vary from person to person.
- 場所によっては、雪が降るでしょう。ばしょによっては、ゆきがふるでしょう。There will be snow in places.
The basics
よる means “to depend on, to rest on”. 〜によって therefore ties a fact to what it depends on: its agent, its means, its cause, or what makes it vary. English needs different words (by, by means of, because of, depending on); Japanese has just one.
It's a very frequent tool in writing (newspapers, signs, temple guides), and the “depending on” use is also common in speech.
Ways of thinking vary from person to person.
- noun
- particle
- verb
- 京都の紅葉は、場所によって見ごろが違う。きょうとのこうようは、ばしょによってみごろがちがう。In Kyoto, the best time for the autumn leaves varies from place to place.
- 話し合いによって、問題を解決した。はなしあいによって、もんだいをかいけつした。We solved the problem by talking it through.
The four uses
You can tell the meaning from the verb that follows: a passive → the agent; an action verb → the means; an incident → the cause; 違う, 変わる, さまざまだ → variation. Before a noun, によって becomes による.
| Use | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| agent (passive) | by | 有名な庭師によって作られた |
| means | by means of | 話し合いによって解決する |
| cause | because of | 大雪によって電車が止まった |
| variation | depending on | 人によって違う |
| による + noun | due to, by | 事故による遅れ |
- 事故による遅れで、会議に間に合わなかった。じこによるおくれで、かいぎにまにあわなかった。Because of a delay caused by an accident, I didn't make it to the meeting in time.
- インターネットによって、世界はとても近くなった。いんたーねっとによって、せかいはとてもちかくなった。Thanks to the Internet, the world has become much smaller.
The agent of the passive: に or によって?
In an ordinary passive, the agent takes に: 先生にほめられた, 犬にかまれた. によって is used mostly for creations, discoveries and official decisions (建てる, 作る, 書く, 発見する, 決める), and in a neutral written style.
With these verbs of creation, に on its own is often impossible: you write この本は夏目そうせきによって書かれた.
- このお寺は、八百年ほど前に有名なお坊さんによって建てられたそうだ。このおてらは、はっぴゃくねんほどまえにゆうめいなおぼうさんによってたてられたそうだ。This temple is said to have been founded about eight hundred years ago by a famous monk.
- 弟は先生にほめられた。おとうとはせんせいにほめられた。My little brother was praised by his teacher.
によっては and によると
によっては means “in some cases, depending on the case”: you're saying something happens sometimes, not always (場所によっては雪が降る, “it will snow in some places”).
によると, seen at N4, gives the source of a piece of information, and the sentence often ends with そうだ or らしい: 天気予報によると、明日は雨だそうだ.
- 日によっては、二時間ぐらい待つこともある。ひによっては、にじかんぐらいまつこともある。On some days, you may have to wait two hours.
- ニュースによると、今年は観光客が増えたらしい。にゅーすによると、ことしはかんこうきゃくがふえたらしい。According to the news, there were more tourists this year.
Common mistakes
- Using によって for the agent of an ordinary passive: “先生によってほめられた” sounds heavy; say 先生にほめられた.
- Mixing up によって (depending on, by) and によると (according to a source): 天気予報によって明日は雨だ is wrong.
- Keeping によって before a noun: write 事故による遅れ, not “事故によって遅れ”.
